Photos, Videos and Songs of Penn 1993

By Kiera Reilly, C’93, and Heidi Howard Tandy, C’92

Five years ago at our 20th reunion party, we showed this video in McClelland Hall. Heidi Howard Tandy, C’92, made the video using photos from our class, some video clips (yes we had video back in 1993), and songs that were popular when we were students.

Take fifteen minutes, watch the video, see if it brings you back to a happy time 25 years ago at Penn, and then click on this link and register to join us at our 25th Reunion!

Caught up in March Madness in 1993

By Zach Conen, C’93, David Foster, Eng’93, Mitchell Kraus, C’93, Kiera Reilly, C’93, and Lisa (Bardfeld) Shapiro, C’93

One of the highlights of our Spring semester senior year was the incredible run the Penn Men’s Basketball team had in Ivy League play, winning the league and defeating Princeton twice (read about the Penn vs. Princeton game on January 30, 1993 at the Palestra in our post here)! As Ivy League Champions, Penn secured an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, aka The Big Dance, and were seeded 14 in the Eastern Region and slated to play 3 seed UMass at the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University (read pre-game articles in The Daily Pennsylvanian from March 19, 1993).

We asked classmates to share their memories of traveling to Syracuse for the game (which sadly Penn lost 54 – 50).

Penn headed to the NCAA tournament! Good thing, as I need a new T-shirt. This one from 1993 is wearing a little thin (yes, they have been since, but I didn’t need a new shirt then).

Still grateful that Claude (the director of the band at the time) excused me from the wind ensemble concert to go to the game.

Great memories of the ‘93 NCAA tournament in Syracuse- from the bus ride up with the band, to being welcomed to the hotel decked out in Red and Blue, to seeing my dad (Bennett Bardfeld W’55, L’58) and all the alumni gathered to cheer on an awesome team.  It was an honor to lead the band at that game, even though the refs were totally paid by UMass!

The Big Dance: More than Just a simple game

SYRACUSE, N.Y.

For many years now I have expounded on the merits of “being there” for the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. The four tournaments I had attended before this year’s yielded the requisite quota of crazed fans, upsets and fantastic finishes, all packed into the standard two-day basketball orgy.

This past weekend, however, was different for the first time, I was making the ultimate hoops pilgrimage with a team I could truly call my own. And for 36 hours, I truly discovered the meaning of March Madness .. .

Thursday, 10:50 p.m. The odyssey commences when Pug, Sid, Steve and I pile into a 1978 Limited Edition Buick Le Sabre named Phillip, easily identifiable by its name spray-painted on the trunk. Phillip is a charming testament to American automotive engineering gone awry, and the cardboard/ Hefty Bag left rear window makes it sound as if you are driving inside of a blender at speeds above 35 miles per hour. The turn signal lever falls off three times during the ride we decide to leave it off.

Friday, 4:07 a.m. We arrive safely but manage to get lost on the streets of the deserted Syracuse campus. We are saved by Grandpa Walton’s evil twin, who is inexplicably out jogging at 3 a.m. in sub-zero temperatures, snot icicles and all. He directs us to the Alpha Chi Rho house, our destination for the evening. 10:23 a.m. After Egg McMuffins and hash browns, we decide to really kick off the day right with Bloody Marys. The only bar open at this hour is the Orange Cafe, where the bartender whips us up some positively delicious bloodies (secret ingredient Grey Poupon). Three of these hearty concoctions and a rousing episode of “The Price is Right” later, our foursome wends its way to the Carrier Dome. On our way out, the bartender reminds us that Happy Hour, featuring one dollar pitchers, begins at 4 o’clock. 12:26 p.m. It is five minutes before tipoff of the Penn game, and I have already lost my voice, my mind and made mortal enemies of the Syracuse local yokels surrounding us in Section 212. Pug advises me to save my voice by screaming from the diaphragm it doesn’t help. I valiantly attempt to ignore the moron sitting behind me, but finally vow to hunt him down after the game when he explains to his wife/ sister (said in best Dave Letterman durab-guy voice): “Duh, I don’t really like UMass, it’s just that Pennsylvania is always so cocky about their football team. Those Nittany Lions are so good every year.” I turn around and give him my best withering glare, but he just thinks I’m staring at the mold on his teeth. 2:37 p.m. The concrete and aluminum Carrier Dome may not be aesthetically pleasing, but the astroturf area in the half of the dome not used for basketball games makes a great place to eat, nap or writhe on the ground lamenting your team’s unjust downfall. (I choose the latter.) As the reality of the heartbreaking loss sinks in, I lapse into zombie state for the Manhattan vs. Virginia game not even the company of my fellow devastated Quakers in Section 307 could ease my pain. I snap out of my trance in time to wonder aloud just exactly what the hell is a Jasper? 7:41 p.m. After scarfing down wings, pizza and more green beer in record time, we hustle back to the Carrier Dome for the evening session. Situated in Section 313, we watch New Mexico State guard Sam Crawford dish out a Carrier Dome tournament record 16 assists against Nebraska. As it becomes apparent that the Aggies are going to advance, the genius seated behind us observes (said in second-best Dave Letterman dumb guy voice): “Hey, New Mexico State wears the same colors as Cincinnati. They may have to play each other in the next round. You know (big pause, thoughtful expression), one of them is going to have to wear white.” I immediately turn around to check for mold on his teeth. 9:33 p.m. Resting precariously in the delicate region between drunk and hung over, we decide to take a short nap on the astroturf between games. I wake up in time to get my picture taken with the New Mexico State cheerleaders. I am convinced that a couple of them are attracted to my newly-raspy voice, but I realize that I’m mistaken when they sprint to the refreshment stand while I’m still blinded by the flash bulb. Feeling refreshed, we settle into our new seats in Section 123 for the Cincinnati vs. Coppin State matchup. 10:45 p.m. At halftime, I fall deeply in love with the Cincinnati dance team, the Dancing Bearcats. These sequined beauties shimmy their way into the spot in my heart formerly reserved for the Penn cheerleaders’ version of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” 11:37 p.m. As the game degenerates into a blowout, we trek back to the Crow house to jump start our weary bodies with some cocktails. With our blood pumping once again, we head out to Maggie’s, a popular Syracuse student bar. The Dancing Bearcats are nowhere to be found, so I resign myself to sitting in a booth and drinking more green beer. (At Syracuse, St. Patrick’s Day apparently doesn’t end until the green beer stops flowing.)

Saturday, 2:23 a.m. During the walk back to the “Crow’s Nest,” as we took to calling our new home, I amuse myself by peeing on a snowbank the size of College Hall. We all fall asleep to the soothing sounds of the MTV Daytona Beach Spring Break concert. I dream of Dancing Bearcats … 11:51 a.m. We wake up, and in a hail of Advil and throat lozenges, we climb into Phillip and take our final leave of the “Crow’s Nest.” I notice that Steve has some mold on his teeth. Ah, March Madness. I don’t think I could have lasted another game.

I don’t remember where we stayed, but I vaguely remember visiting local bars before and after the game. I remember being seated way up in the nosebleed seats – but that’s what the NCAA gives each participating school in their ticket allotment.

Penn Class of 1993 Remembers Penn vs. Princeton Basketball

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

During our time at Penn, Penn vs. Princeton basketball games were not to be missed. No matter how good (or not) the Penn and Princeton teams were, the games we played against each other were always nail-biters, exciting and exhilarating. We were blessed to see the start of a fabulous Penn run of Ivy titles when the team clinched the Ivy League title our senior year (our Ivy Stone is on the outside of the Palestra for a reason).

The Class of 1993’s Ivy Stone on the front wall of the Palestra.

When Penn played Princeton at the Palestra on January 6th this year (winning  76 – 70 – click for story here), we asked classmates to share their memories of Penn vs. Princeton basketball back in the day. Here is what they shared.

NOTE: Penn plays Princeton at 6pm tonight at Jadwin Gym. If you’re not at the game you can watch on ESPNU! Go Quakers! Beat Princeton!

Eli Faskha, ENG’93, W’93

Eli shared a Penn basketball stub and program from our win over Princeton 64 – 46 at the Palestra on January 30, 1993.

Stephen Jung, C’93

There was always a fun energy at the Palestra. Since it wasn’t a shallow bowl, even the upper level felt close to the action. One of my best memories was the Penn-Princeton game our freshmen year. Penn’s down 49-50 with 2 seconds on the clock. Paul Chambers is on the line for a one-and-one (I though it was Vince Curran until I saw video online). Chambers misses the free throw, but Hassan Duncombe swoops in for the offensive rebound and put-back. Penn 51-Princeton 50. The place went nuts. I remember throwing streamers from the stands after the first Penn basket of the game. Then there was Ivy Day, when we planted ours in the courtyard. I worked at a Med School lab for 2 years after graduation, so I caught some games then. I even saw a Penn-Princeton game at Jadwin. It wasn’t the Palestra.

Read the post from last year Happy 90th Birthday to the Palestra which includes photos of basketball programs that Stephen shared.

Stephen also shared photos from the Penn vs. Yale game on March 5, 1993 (the start of our Spring Break). Penn beat Yale 71 – 49 and clinched the Ivy League title for 1992 – 1993.

Kiera Reilly, C’93

Unfortunately for me, I didn’t go to basketball games my freshman year, so I missed the Chambers, Curran, Duncombe era. But our junior and senior years were pretty special. I think it was our junior year that we went to the Penn-Princeton game after a club board meeting – all of us didn’t have tickets and somehow we snuck in and were up in the corner. And it was craziness and so much fun.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Penn, Princeton and Pete (Carrill).

I can’t remember what year it was but I remember Penn students unrolling those two long banners right behind the bench during that game.

James Saint, C’93

Great memories, one of which was standing in front of a much older alumnus. I’m thinking he was probably at least 60. He kept bugging me to sit down, I was blocking his view. He was the ONLY ONE SITTING DOWN. Finally he started yelling at me. So I sat down. After a few seconds when nobody else in front of him sat down, I turned to him and said, “Well that worked didn’t it?” And stood back up. He left. Maybe he was a Princeton alumnus. Who knows.

Second best: late 1991-1992 season just before the Quakers busted out, Barry Pierce missed a three pointer at the buzzer that would have beat Princeton, from the right corner. It just felt good to put a scare into the Princeton fans in the Palestra. It also felt hopeful for the future.

Ari David Sherwood, Eng’93

Tim Krug’s dunk down the lane against Princeton in the ’92-’93 undefeated season putting an exclamation point on the 64-46 win at the Palestra.

Kiera Reilly, C’93

Kruuuuuuuuuuug!

David Foster, Eng’93

There is no beating this moment: Maloney 3 to put us up by 10, and immediate Princeton time out. This is the moment we knew this season was going to be something special:

Ari David Sherwood, Eng’93

That block by Krug was epic, and Maloney was a stone cold assassin. What a fun team that was. And that video really shows how great the crowds were back then. We need to see those kinds of crowds again at the Palestra. I think Donahue is slowly getting us back there. Go Quakers!

Let’s Go Quakers!

Beat Princeton!

Fight On Penn!

Penn Sweatshirts Survive a Quarter Century (28 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

At a Penn Fund event in Los Angeles in October, the featured speaker was one of our classmates – Beth Winkelstein, ENG’93, Vice Provost for Education at Penn! It was awesome to have someone in our class speak to distinguished alumni, and it was nice to catch up with Beth after her talk.

But what was really cool was that Beth brought a Penn sweatshirt to the event. A Penn sweatshirt that she had since she was a student at Penn.

That had me wondering who else still has a Penn sweatshirt? Here are some of the photos of sweatshirts that classmates sent us.

Cicely Fegley, C’93, GEd’94

These are some of my vintage shirts from back in the day. I bought them on campus when I was a student. Occasionally I wear the Not Penn State shirt, but I’m always a little concerned about offending the Nittany Lions. I love when I get a chuckle or thumbs up from fellow Quakers, though.

I did the trendy cut the v-neck thing.  Basically every seam in the wrist and the waist is ripped.  It’s falling apart.
When did she acquire the sweatshirt?
I think during Quaker Days in spring of 1989. I stayed overnight in the Quad and hung out with a host, etc etc.

Carol Jee, W’93

Here’s a pic of my old Champion Penn sweatshirt. I got it as a gift from a family friend who was a freshman at Penn when I got in Early Decision in December. It made it through all four years at Penn. Now it is fragile and filled with holes but I still wear it 25 years later.

After some back and forth on email, we determined that it was probably a pre or post Penn-Columbia basketball game at Deb and Jef’s apartment in Morning Side Heights while Deb was in law school. We estimated the time frame to be 1995 – 1996. One thing we did agree on was that the Penn sweatshirt never goes out of style!

Andy Roth, C’93

This was the sweatshirt I bought before the 1992-1993 season when I worked for WXPN and came on all road trips as the Quakers won the Ivy and almost beat U Mass in Syracuse in the NCAA Tournament.  It’s great to see Steve Donahue back where he belongs and Penn in 1st this season!

Planning for the Return of 1993! (34 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

September at Penn – the start of the new academic year, and time for alumni to return to campus to begin planning their upcoming reunions. The weekend of September 15 – 16, Alumni Relations and the Penn Fund invited reunion and gift committees to campus for the Penn Reunion Leadership Conference (#PRLC18) – a full day of planning, strategizing and energizing alumni classes for Alumni Weekend 2018 on May 11 – 13th.

The Class of 1993 was already engaged with a sizable list of alumni agreeing to be on our 25th reunion committee and gift committee (the list included over 100 classmates at the beginning of September, and we are now well over 200 volunteers). Our class Facebook group is active in keeping classmates connected with each other.

A small group of classmates convened on Friday afternoon in the Sweeten Alumni House to kick-start our efforts, and then more classmates joined us for the full day on Saturday. We were thrilled to see classmates representing different groups at Penn – we all didn’t know each other as students, but we all share a deep affection for the Red and the Blue.

Here are some of the photos from our fun weekend – we had a great time talking about the reunion, and we can not wait until May to see more of our class return to Penn and celebrate the 25th anniversary of our graduation from Penn.

Early in the morning on Saturday, we asked everyone attending #PRLC18 to record a cheer for classmate Chrissy Hofbeck on “Survivor.”

We asked everyone to contribute to our new, “I Am” coming video.

Have you seen it? Who’s in for our 25th Reunion?

We brainstormed, laughed, and discussed how best to entice as many classmates as possible to return in May for our 25th Reunion. We worked on the schedule for the weekend, pricing for the Alumni Weekend package, themes for our reunion, communications strategies for outreach and for giving participation. The most important thing we wanted to accomplish was to contact every classmate before our reunion and encourage them to return to campus in May. We thank everyone that joined us in September, and we thank everyone that has been working to encourage friends to attend Alumni Weekend.

We can’t wait to Meet you at the Button in May!

See below for what you should be doing NOW to plan for the reunion, and contact us if you’d like to help!

Penn Serves LA 2016 – 2017 Year in Review

Penn Serves LA logo volunteering with Penn Alumni in Los Angeles

Since 2012, Penn Serves LA has been dedicated to the mission of providing Penn alumni with vetted opportunities for meaningful community service in the Los Angeles area. We work with a diverse mix of community organizations, with hands-on programs in a variety of locations throughout the city, all under our motto of SERVE, LEARN and HAVE FUN too. In some cases, Penn alumni become involved with the organizations we serve on an ongoing basis.

The projects and the impact of Penn Serves LA, along with the engagement of our participants, during 2016-2017 are described below. This past year, Penn Alumni, along with their families and friends, participated in a broad array of service activities across a wide swath of the LA region. Our projects included home building, fruit picking, blanket crocheting, food re-purposing, fluorescent painting, and literacy celebrating.

We have already kicked off our 2017 – 2018 year of activities with several events:

A calendar of impactful activities and projects for the year ahead is scheduled, and we look forward to working alongside Penn alumni, families and friends in 2018. Confirmed events for 2018 include:

We welcome all Penn alumni and their families and friends to participate at our events and are deeply grateful to the many people who participated in our projects last year, whether one time or frequently.  Through active engagement, Penn Serves LA builds bonds among our alumni, across all years and schools, while contributing to the strength of our great city.

October 2016: Got Books? Led by CEO and Penn alumnus Parker Hudnut, ICEF Public Schools is a Los Angeles based charter operator that oversees nine inner-city charter schools serving over 3,500 K-12 students. Penn volunteers staffed a wonderful literacy day, helping with craft projects, reading to kids, and generally sharing their love of books with the eager young students and their families.

November 2016: Alumni made a visit to LA Kitchen, an organization working to empower, nourish and engage our community by reclaiming and repurposing healthy, local food that would otherwise be discarded. Alumni donned aprons and wielded large knives to convert bruised fruits and vegetables into healthy meals for seniors and the disadvantaged.

January 2017: Penn Serves volunteers were trained in the art of crocheting with the lofty goal of creating soft, cheerful handmade blankets. Blankets of Love donates these works of love to bring some sense of security and joy to babies leaving Martin Luther King, and other area hospitals, with mothers and families who have little or no means, or who are living on the street.

January 2017: We toasted Ben Franklin’s birthday and the New Year at a festive cocktail party. Our attendees took a moment to share a bit of their Penn story and their motivation for engaging with Penn Serves LA. As is true at all events, a wonderful cross-section of Penn schools and years were represented and hearing the stories about people choosing to commit time and energy to improve our city was most inspiring.

April 2017: For the second time, Penn alumni partnered with Habitat for Humanity for a lengthy, exhausting and most memorable day of working on a new home side by side with the family that will live there. People caulked, sawed, framed, installed siding and generally felt terrific about learning new skills and contributing to creating a lovely home for a family in need.

May 2017: On a very hot day, alumni drove great distances to Orcutt Farm to work with Food Forward, an organization that has “rescued” over 100 million servings of fresh local produce in the past eight years. We spent the afternoon in an orange grove with other volunteers and picked 6500 pounds of fresh oranges, which would be delivered that very day to some of the 300 shelters, senior centers, and agencies Food Forward serves.

July 2017: It was a happy day when Penn Serves volunteers spent an afternoon using fantastic fluorescent colors to paint flowers on enormous disks. Portraits of Hope was started in 1995 to develop motivational art projects to provide creative therapy for children with special needs, and civic education for students, by producing dynamic public artworks. The 1000 disks we helped to create will be distributed to adorn and brighten animal shelters throughout the city.

August 2017: For our final project of the academic year, our volunteers assisted LA Works, an umbrella organization that, like Penn Serves, strives to empower Angelenos to address pressing social issues through volunteerism and community collaborations. The activities this day were focused entirely on the pressing issue of family and youth homelessness, and we listened to first-hand stories, created fleece blankets, packed necessity kits and the like.

Who You Gonna Call? (35 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

The Penn Student Directory was a printed listing of all the students at Penn – their campus address and phone numbers. It was published every academic year by Penn Student Agencies.

We managed to track down three of the student directories from our time at Penn.

Rob Williams, C’93, had our first student directory with a beautiful photo of Locust Walk in the Spring.

As you can see from the cover page below, students’ local (Philly) address and phone numbers were listed as well as the home address, expected graduation year and faternity/sorority affiliation. The information was provided by the Registrar.

Remember Penntrex? It’s a, “state-of-the-art telephone system.” The monthly line cost was $8.00.

I remember the coupons in the directory – poor college students needed these to save money!

I had the covers from two directories in my stash of Penn things. Here is the one from our junior year.

I worked at Penn Student Agencies during my four years at Penn, and the summer between my junior and senior year, I worked in the PSA office.

Since the student directory was produced by PSA, there was a summer staff working on the directory.

Here is a photo of us having fun on the Button.

I remember having many laughs with this crew, and I contacted Chris and Diana to see if they remembered anything specific about our summer working in the basement of Houston Hall (where Penn Student Agencies was located while we were students).

Diana immediately responded with this memory:

I do remember us ruthlessly teasing Jeff, about what I don’t remember. Probably him saying my last name is spelled “H-U-R-O-K” as in “you are Ok, ok?”

I remembered that too – because he’d call to leave his name and say, “H as in Harrry, you are OK.” To this day, whenever I leave a message and have to spell something, I always say H as in Harry and think of Jeff!

Diana also said:

I remember thinking while going door to door from business to business “I signed up to do this again?!?” While walking around in 90+ degree heat and 90% humidity!

Chris chimed in and said that we had a lot of targets for teasing, including Publications Director Mo Massel, C’94.

Here are some photos of what we worked on all summer, the student directory for our senior year at Penn.

She’s a Survivor! (36 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

In our weekly countdown posts, we are a bit behind schedule. This post should have appeared for the weekend of September 1- 2, 2017. Why? Because on August 30th our class was surprised to learn that one of our very own  – Chrissy Bass Hofbeck, C’93 – was a contestant on Season 35 of CBS’s Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers!

After the announcement in August, we had to wait for the season premiere of the show to see Chrissy…and in every week since then, many in our class are tuning in to CBS at 8:00 PM to watch the latest episode and see if she survives. As of today, November 29, Chrissy is still competing. Tonight’s episode is a double-one, so we are hoping she survives tonight too!

Here is some information about the show and Chrissy:

Chrissy first applied to be a Survivor contestant in 2001, and continued to apply many times since then until she was finally selected for this season.

Filming for this season was in the Mamanuca Islands, Fiji in April and May of this year. Chrissy’s family, and the families of the other contestants had no idea where they were filming. Everyone was provided one way tickets to Los Angeles, and then all phones were confiscated prior to them flying to their final destination. Even once a contestant is voted off, there is still no communication until the season’s filming is complete.

In pre-show publicity, show host Jeff Probst said in his Castaway Assessment on Entertainment Tonight (Septmber 12, 2017) that Chrissy was, “one of [his] all-time favorite people.” We couldn’t agree more!

Tribes this season were initially divided by positive characteristics as described by others, and Chrissy was placed in the Heroes tribe.

CBS Survivor cast Chrissy Bass Hofbeck

Chrissy’s husband Keith could not share her whereabouts with anyone, and told everyone that she was away on business in Brazil. Once word got out that she had left her job at Prudential, he tried not to leave the house!

To train for the show, Chrissy joined an indoor swimming pool and swam laps daily. She learned slide puzzles and tangrams, and did general walking and running each day. She also weaned herself off coffee and gained 5-7 pounds.

In past shows, Survivor has had many Ivy League alumni competitors. Chrissy is the fifth Penn alumnus to compete. The others were Gregg Carey (Season 10 Palau), Charlie Herschel (Season 17 Gabon), So Kim (Season 30 Worlds Apart), Cydney Gillon (Season 32 Kaoh Rong). We are the second highest Ivy in terms of participants with Brown holding the number one slot with six competitors.

We are excited to tune in and watch Chrissy every week, and hope she survives in tonight’s episode. Regardless of how the game ends, she’s a winner to us!

Hurrah, Hurrah Chrissy! We hope you outlive, outplay and outlast the competition!

Tune in to CBS Survivor tonight at 8:00 PM!
