Editor’s note: In addition to the academic papers Eli shared with us a few posts ago, he also sent photos and sports ticket stubs.
Billy Goldstein, Engβ93, and I drove to Ithaca to visit a friend that was hosting a party, but we were there for the Penn-Cornell game. I remember the crowd was smallish, and the 50-or-so Penn fans made a lot more noise than the home fans. After the half, the third quarter started late because the field was full of drunk Cornell students and they had to be escorted off the field!
Penn defeated Cornell 14 – 7 to end the season with a 5 -2 Ivy and 7 -3 overall record.

A famous phrase seen and referenced often at Penn. You may recognize the phrase, or the phrase in its original Latin,Β Inveniemus viam aut faciemus. But do you remember where you have seen this written on campus?
It is on the arch of the Class of 1893 gate that straddles the walkway between Houston Hall and Williams Hall. How fitting that a Penn class that graduated 100 years before us (the original Penn ’93), is responsible for enshrining this quote on campus.
The Penn Current featured a story of the gate in April, and I knew we had to share more about this gate with our class in the countdown to our reunion year. The old photo below shows College Hall in the background. Houston Hall is to the right of the gate, and Williams Hall is the building that is now to the left.
The Class of 1893 Gate – Photo Credit University Archives and Records Center. The latin inscription across the arch translates to, “We will find a way or we shall make one.”
Marking an entrance into campus from Spruce Street, and tucked between Houston and Williams halls, sits the Class of 1893 Memorial Gate. Designed by two members of the classβElliston P. Bissell and William C. Haysβthe gate has a brick and terracotta base with arched ironwork that spells out the class motto in Latin: Inveniemus viam aut faciemus. (This translates to mean βWe will find a way or we shall make one.β)
Β
Bissell and Hays were part of the first class in Pennβs School of Architecture, and designed the gate in 1900. Hays, in fact, was already familiar with sketching ideas for campus structures: He won first place in the competition to design a student union for Penn, Houston Hall. (Milton Bennett Medary, Jr. won second place and the two designs were combined, with Medaryβs design being the exterior.) In 1904, Hays took a position at the University of California and, over the years, worked as architect and consulting architect on many of that universityβs buildings on the Davis, San Francisco, and Berkeley campuses. After the San Francisco fire of 1906, Hays was on the team that supervised the rebuilding of much of the destroyed city.
After graduation, Bissell worked first with the firm Cope and Stewardson, and then opened his own firm, Bissell and Sinkler, where he worked until his retirement in 1936. In his career, Bissell helped to restore buildings in Independence Square, designed residential buildings in Gloucester, N.J., and Chester, Pa., and helped to restore Elfrethβs Alley and estates in Germantown. For years, Bissell was also a member of the Committee for the Preservation of Historic Monuments and a chairman of a state survey of historic buildings.
For more information about this and other historical aspects of Penn, visit theΒ University Archives website.
And as Paul Harvey might say, “now you know the rest of the story!”

This summer the craft bug hit me, and with long sunny days, what better craft project to tackle than painting numbers? I was in Jo Ann Fabrics and Crafts and the large paper mache numbers were on sale! I decided to buy three different sizes of numbers and painted them different ways. A perfect project for a lazy summer day – also, painting is fun! You focus on making it perfect and forget all the other projects or tasks you *should* be doing instead.
Crafting for Penn 1993!
Small wooden numbers (note how the sides are in the contrasting blue or red?). I really like how these look.
Playing around with how to paint the large numbers – Each color area needed two coats. On the right I did blue edges, then white border and red…but you couldn’t really see the blue.
I brought the numbers to Philadelphia, and we took some photos at the Center City location for our Friday night party.
Kiera Reilly, Colleen Kelly, Hillary Hayes and Lisa Grabelle scouting locations for our Friday night reunion party with our 1993 numbers! (Intentionally obscured the view until we officially announce reunion weekend details)
The numbers also explored campus a bit, thanks to our Alumni Relations liaison Colleen Kelly.

As Iβm going through old photos and papers from our time at Penn, Iβm listening to Depeche Mode, one of my favorite bands from high school and college. And as Iβm sorting through old emails and documents, I found this list of songs from classmates.
When we were preparing for our 15th reunion in May of 2008, we needed a song that would play as we marched down Locust Walk in the alumni parade and arrived at the viewing stand. By popular vote, House of Painβs βJump Aroundβ won. And, after listening to it, how can you not Jump Around?
βJump Around,β wasnβt the only song that we rememberedβ¦here are other suggestions from classmates. It was interesting to read how many of us suggested the same songs or the same bands. Throw these all together on a playlist and you have a βmix tapeβ soundtrack of the early 90βs at Penn! (A mix tape! What is that???)
Songs suggested multiple times by 1993 Classmates
βJump Aroundβ β House of Pain
βGroove is in the Heartβ β Deee-Lite

Deb Brown:
βTennesseeβ by Arrested Development and two obvious R.E.M. songs: βShiny Happy Peopleβ and βLosing my Religionβ. Also βDyslexic Heartβ from the Singles soundtrack.

βJump Aroundβ definitely brings back some senior year memories for me…..

You never know what treasures you will find when cleaning out the attic, basement, or boxes of things in the back of a closet. As we countdown the weeks to our 25th Penn reunion #93tothe25th, we are encouraging classmates to share photos, memories or mementos of our time at Penn.
Melanie Hirschfelder Berkowitz, C’93, found some items from Penn in her attic. One was the Spring 1990 issue of Highball Magazine, a humor magazine created by Penn students. This issue is the 35th anniversary issue.

Melanie writes:
I was cleaning out my attic and found a few mementos from Penn you might be interested in…my personal favorite, an edition of Highball Magazine with a very interesting page inside.
No, not the masthead…

Perhaps this page?

Melanie says,
I did not write for Highball, and I’m not sure why I kept it, but the Trump thing was too funny not to share.

You may have noticed that our weekly reunion countdown took a bit of a summer break (senioritis perhaps?). But it is August and as children around the country start or prepare to start their school year, the Class of 1993 is gearing up for the year ahead and the planning for our 25th Reunion in May!
We thought a re-boot of our countdown was in order, and what better way to re-boot than by looking back at the machines we re-booted at Penn – our very own computers! For many of us, we arrived at Penn with typewrites (like me) and no personal computer. Papers were written on computers borrowed from the few hall-mates that had them or in the computer labs around campus. We toted our floppy disks in our back-packs and popped them in the computers whenever we needed to work.
Classmate Caren Lissner shared a photo of her college computer and memories of her first computer purchase – a Macintosh.
Caren Lissner’s Macintosh Classic II from her senior year at Penn.
Caren’s recollection:
By the end of senior year, around 1993, I’d saved just enough money to buy a Macintosh Classic II from the Penn computer store at a discounted student rate (it was something like $1,100). I had always used the campus computer rooms and libraries to type papers, so I was glad to finally have my own machine so I could work on resumes. The computer moved with me to Hoboken after college, and I ended up writing my first published novel on it. I loved my little Mac even though I finally bought a a Dell around 1999 and put it away in storage. Now it’s in a closet, and I’m never giving it away (but I should probably clean it up a little).
Caren Lissner’s floppy disks
Did you have a PC at Penn? Did you arrive on campus with it freshman year or did you purchase it while you were a student? Do you still have any of your floppy disks?

Last summer, we started counting down the ninety-three weeks until our 25th Penn Reunion, and now, the weekend of May 12 – 15, 2017, we are at the one year mark until we celebrate the twenty-five years since our graduation from Penn.
We celebrated our first Alumni Day on Saturday, May 15, 1993, by marching down Locust Walk as a class to lead the alumni parade of classes. We gathered on College Green to listen to Penn President Sheldon Hackney and sing, “The Red and The Blue.”

Our Reunion will be here before we know it – look for information about our hotel block very soon. In the meantime, be sure to save our the reunion dates on your calendar, and also save Monday, May 14, which is Commencement. The 25th and 50th reunion classes are invited to march in the Commencement procession, and it is very special to walk on Franklin Field again with the alumni classes. We strongly encourage you to participate if you can!

Every classmate is invited to join us for a fun weekend of reunion planning back at Penn Reunion Leadership Conference (PRLC) on September 15- 16. The conference is actually one day on Saturday, September 16th, but we will have Class of 93 only planning on the 15th in the afternoon and then all go out that night. We welcome you to join us for either or both days.
We want to continue our trip down memory lane, and are looking for blog posts, photos, mementos or memories of our time at Penn. Please email us if you have something to share – we want to include as many classmates as possible in our future posts.
We are excited as we look toward this next year, and hope to make our reunion next May one that our entire class will not forget.

This weekend, August 19 β 20, 2016 marks 90 weeks to the Penn Class of 1993βs 25th reunion (May 11 β 13, 2018). #93tothe25th
Going through boxes of old papers, I found THE book that we used to find our classmates as we started Penn together β The Freshman Record.
Before Facebook, this was the book to look for people based on their high school, home town or what dorm they were living in at Penn. Everyone sent in their high school yearbook photos, and I remember once we made new friends at Penn, it was fun to look through the book and see our glamorous shots from high school. I think also upper classman used the book to scope out the freshman class?
Do you still have your copy of the Freshman Record? Do you have a memory to share? Comment below!
We are also accepting photos and memories from our fellow 1993 classmates to be featured on a future #93tothe25th countdown post. Email us at UPenn1993@gmail.com.
If you are a member of the Penn Class of 1993, please join our Facebook and LinkedIn groups. We are also on Twitter, Tumblr, and recently joined Instagram.
And donβt forget to save the date of our 25th reunion on your calendar:
The countdown to Alumni Weekend continues, and before we know it weβll be back on campus celebrating our 20th reunion. The Penn Class of 1993 reunion and gift committees are calling and emailing classmates, encouraging them to attend and to make a gift to The Penn Fund.
To get everyone in the Red and Blue spirit for Alumni Weekend, here are some buttons Iβve collected from when I was a student, the first few years after we graduated, and now as a staff member in alumni relations.
Buttons I collected while working for alumni relations.
Homecoming 1998 and 2000, Penn’s 250th Anniversary in 1990, and Ivy Champs in ’92-’93.
1992’s South Street Strut, 1993s Walnut Walk and South Street Strut
Does anyone else have a Penn button collection?
We hope to see everyone from the Class of 1993 at THE Button in May!
