We asked classmates to share their Penn photos with us as we take a trip down memory lane in advance of our 25th Reunion. ~Penn Class of 1993
By Oren Efrati, ENG’93
In the days before smart phones, we took pictures with film and there was no tagging feature, so we rely on our weary brains to remember “what were we thinking?”…
The first picture is a scene from the Quad freshman year, featuring some stylish shades and a blazer.
Joanna Kwa and Tim Teramoto
The picture of us wearing ties was taken in some sort of “semi-formal”, though I’m not really sure what that meant, except maybe an excuse to show we knew how to tie a tie (or wear a cool v-neck sweater in the case of Chris Winfield).
Chris Winfield, Chris Flack, Oren Efrati, Mick Ballesteros, Tim Teramoto
Joanna Kwa chimes in to say, “Hahaha! Yes, the ties were for a wine and Cheese party at our apartment during senior year. We were trying to act all grown up! The guys were all sitting in my bedroom! You can see the small remnant of my hat from Hey Day in the back.”
The last two pictures are, I believe, from senior year at a party at our house… I think it featured a lot of beer and hot dogs.

At a Penn Fund event in Los Angeles in October, the featured speaker was one of our classmates – Beth Winkelstein, ENG’93, Vice Provost for Education at Penn! It was awesome to have someone in our class speak to distinguished alumni, and it was nice to catch up with Beth after her talk.
But what was really cool was that Beth brought a Penn sweatshirt to the event. A Penn sweatshirt that she had since she was a student at Penn.

That had me wondering who else still has a Penn sweatshirt? Here are some of the photos of sweatshirts that classmates sent us.
Cicely Fegley, C’93, GEd’94
These are some of my vintage shirts from back in the day. I bought them on campus when I was a student. Occasionally I wear the Not Penn State shirt, but I’m always a little concerned about offending the Nittany Lions. I love when I get a chuckle or thumbs up from fellow Quakers, though.

I did the trendy cut the v-neck thing. Basically every seam in the wrist and the waist is ripped. It’s falling apart.
When did she acquire the sweatshirt?
I think during Quaker Days in spring of 1989. I stayed overnight in the Quad and hung out with a host, etc etc.

Carol Jee, W’93
Here’s a pic of my old Champion Penn sweatshirt. I got it as a gift from a family friend who was a freshman at Penn when I got in Early Decision in December. It made it through all four years at Penn. Now it is fragile and filled with holes but I still wear it 25 years later.

This is the sweatshirt my mom bought upon her first parents visit our freshman year. Still holding on it! Wore it to the Penn Women’s basketball game last year at UCLA!

I discovered this old photo from after we graduated. I had to ask the other people in the photo what we were all doing….
Jef Pollock, Deb Brown, Bardo Ramirez, Kiera Reilly, Rick Greenberg, Dianna Tapper and Jason Gorevic
After some back and forth on email, we determined that it was probably a pre or post Penn-Columbia basketball game at Deb and Jef’s apartment in Morning Side Heights while Deb was in law school. We estimated the time frame to be 1995 – 1996. One thing we did agree on was that the Penn sweatshirt never goes out of style!
Andy Roth, C’93
This was the sweatshirt I bought before the 1992-1993 season when I worked for WXPN and came on all road trips as the Quakers won the Ivy and almost beat U Mass in Syracuse in the NCAA Tournament. It’s great to see Steve Donahue back where he belongs and Penn in 1st this season!

Do you still have a Penn sweatshirt from when we were students? Send us a picture of it!

Alice Lai Platt found a treasure trove of Penn documents when she visited her parents.
Do you remember once you received your acceptance letter from Penn all the mail that we received about our first year?

After acceptance, there was usually a local reception for admitted students – to convince you to matriculate at Penn.

Alice received two letters from the United Minorities Council after she was admitted.

There is a letter about the academic integrity of Penn.

Another letter from the College about advising sessions on campus and a “hot-line” if you are unable to attend in person.

Finally, something Alice saved from the end of her time at Penn – a letter from the Annenberg School about a Communications Major reception for graduation.

Do you remember receiving all of this communication from Penn? Did you save any of your letters?

Editor’s note: Eli found this treasure trove of academic memorabilia in his basement recently (along with a “pristine, never-read copy of the 1993 Record”), and shared a little about each item. Do current students do anything on paper anymore?!
An old M&T Planning Guide – Every engineering student had to complete a Planning Guide and get approval from a faculty advisor. You would plan all the classes you would take during your college life! Back in the days, a College career required 32 credits, Wharton needed 36 credits, and Engineering, 40 credits (5 classes x 8 semesters). Management & Technology required 48 credits!

Just printing the cover page took a long time in those days in a first edition HP Deskjet Plus printer!

My Microsoft Intern offer letter – I remember that out of all the interviews MS did on campus that year, they offered two internships, the other being David Hafken, C’93, ENG’93, who was my groupmate in several classes, and at Microsoft we ended up as roommates as well!

Editor’s note: In an off-line discussion, I asked Chris for some of his ultimate frisbee photos and I soon received links to these photos and a few words about the team. A search in the archives of The DP led us to some photos published back in the day.

The Void was (and is) the Penn Women’s Men’s Ultimate Frisbee teams. The Void of 1993 competed all up and down the East Coast, coming in 5th in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The guys from the Class of ’93 have remained the best of friends — in fact, the East Coast contingent can be spotted this weekend at the Penn v. Cornell Men’s Basketball game.

Dorm living. No kitchens. Maybe a small fridge, maybe, maybe a hot pot or a microwave…what to eat with limited funds? Pizza!
It seems that freshman year we ate a lot of pizza.

September at Penn – the start of the new academic year, and time for alumni to return to campus to begin planning their upcoming reunions. The weekend of September 15 – 16, Alumni Relations and the Penn Fund invited reunion and gift committees to campus for the Penn Reunion Leadership Conference (#PRLC18) – a full day of planning, strategizing and energizing alumni classes for Alumni Weekend 2018 on May 11 – 13th.
The Class of 1993 was already engaged with a sizable list of alumni agreeing to be on our 25th reunion committee and gift committee (the list included over 100 classmates at the beginning of September, and we are now well over 200 volunteers). Our class Facebook group is active in keeping classmates connected with each other.
A small group of classmates convened on Friday afternoon in the Sweeten Alumni House to kick-start our efforts, and then more classmates joined us for the full day on Saturday. We were thrilled to see classmates representing different groups at Penn – we all didn’t know each other as students, but we all share a deep affection for the Red and the Blue.

Here are some of the photos from our fun weekend – we had a great time talking about the reunion, and we can not wait until May to see more of our class return to Penn and celebrate the 25th anniversary of our graduation from Penn.
Early in the morning on Saturday, we asked everyone attending #PRLC18 to record a cheer for classmate Chrissy Hofbeck on “Survivor.”

Have you seen it? Who’s in for our 25th Reunion?
We brainstormed, laughed, and discussed how best to entice as many classmates as possible to return in May for our 25th Reunion. We worked on the schedule for the weekend, pricing for the Alumni Weekend package, themes for our reunion, communications strategies for outreach and for giving participation. The most important thing we wanted to accomplish was to contact every classmate before our reunion and encourage them to return to campus in May. We thank everyone that joined us in September, and we thank everyone that has been working to encourage friends to attend Alumni Weekend.
We can’t wait to Meet you at the Button in May!
See below for what you should be doing NOW to plan for the reunion, and contact us if you’d like to help!
