I was skeptical when I heard the 2012 Wharton MBA graduation would be held in the Palestra. The Palestra is a beautiful place for sports, not graduations. Boy, was I wrong. Yesterday, the historic Palestra was transformed into a beautiful graduation venue for the 850 MBA and Executive MBA graduates. But don’t take my word for it. I have the images to prove it!

Once per week, I attend a knitting club after work.
I know what you’re thinking…No, knitting isn’t just for old ladies! In fact, the group, Stitch Therapy, includes Penn undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and alumni. As advertised on the Penn Women’s Center website, Stitch Therapy is for “knitting, crocheting, sewing & conversation.” We meet one evening per week in the Penn Women’s Center to work on our projects.
I learned how to knit during fall semester of my junior year at Penn. I registered for the “Knitting 101” proprietorial, and I was lucky enough to get in.
Many of my classmates and friends have told me they also tried getting into the knitting precptorial, but that it was always full. Who knew a knitting class would be so competitive! I learned how to knit a hat in “Knitting 101,” and a buttonhole bag the following semester in the intermediate level knitting preceptorial.
Since then, I have knit more scarves than I know what to do with (including multiple red and blue scarves – Go Penn!), and I learned how to crochet last year.
This week, we held our last Stitch Therapy meeting of the spring semester. One of our members suggested we do a yarn swap. Many of us have Tupperware bins full of yarn we have collected over the years. Sometimes, we forget when or why we bought that color or weight of yarn, and we do not ever plan to use it. That is when the yarn swap comes in. Everyone brought their unwanted skeins to this week’s meeting, and we had a take-what-you-want session. Look at how much yarn we had to swap at the meeting!

I played tennis at the Hamlin Tennis Courts at Penn Park for the first time this past Saturday. The courts are beautiful! I look forward to playing there more often. On Sunday, I returned to Hamlin as a spectator to cheer on the Penn Women’s Tennis team. It was my first Penn Women’s tennis match, and I was so impressed with the talent, skill, and determination of the Quakers on the court.

There was a time before my Penn career when I didn’t know the lyrics to “Drink a Highball.” Now, I actually find myself singing the song one, two, sometimes three times per day – especially if the day includes a Penn Alumni event or a Penn Men’s Basketball game (Thanks, Penn Band!). Here is a cheat sheet for those of you who haven’t committed the lines to memory.

As I was walking down Walnut Street yesterday, I couldn’t help but notice all of the red and blue clothing in the store windows. Stripes, polka dots, solids. So much red! So much blue! There is no better time to stock up on red and blue attire. You never know when you will want everyone in the room to know which team you are rooting for in the game of the year.

As a Penn Men’s Basketball fan, there are few greater feelings than when your beloved Quakers beat Princeton. The energy at the Palestra was unbelievable, and it was amazing to see the student section packed to the max! Hope to see you all this Friday at the Palestra when Penn takes on undefeated Harvard. There will be a few special guests in the student section, so be sure to come to the game! Students can pick up free tickets to the game this week on Locust Walk 11AM – 2PM. See you on Friday! My dear friend and Penn classmate sent this adorable e-card to me yesterday. I wish I were in Taiwan celebrating with my family. Instead, I will be celebrating in Philadelphia with a traditional feast of fish, leek, noodles, mandarin oranges, and turnip cake (my favorite). I was thrilled to hear today that the Red and Blue Crew is going to New York City for the Penn Men’s Basketball game at Columbia University this Friday. I just finalized my long weekend travel plans, which includes going to NYC to watch the Penn Quakers crush the Columbia Lions on Friday night. Tickets are still available on the Columbia Men’s Basketball website. Last year’s game was sold out, so buy your tickets today before they sell out! The Penn alumni community always has a strong presence at the Penn @ Columbia game because there are so many Penn alumni in the NYC area. I cannot wait to see Penn student and alumni faces in the crowd cheering on the Quakers this Friday night! In the meantime, see you tonight (Jan 10th) for the Penn vs. LaSalle game at The Palestra. Penn Men’s Basketball fans can always count on The Red and Blue Crew to bring clever rollouts to the games. It looks like the students had a message for Fran Dunphy, Temple’s head coach, at the Penn vs. Temple game.
The rollout at the Penn vs. Temple Men’s Basketball game reads "Dunphy: We mustache you a question, but we'll shave it for later. #NoShaveNovember.”
The rollouts can be quite competitive and mean-spirited sometimes, but The Red and Blue Crew keeps it tame and tasteful when it comes to Coach Dunphy. Dunphy was head coach of Penn’s Men’s Basketball from 1989 to 2006. He won 10 Ivy League titles in his 17-year career at Penn before he went on to be head coach at Temple. He did so much for the basketball program at Penn, and he will always be a legend in the Palestra.
The next Penn Men’s Basketball game is on Wednesday, December 7 at 7 PM! Hope to see you there when Penn plays Delaware in the Palestra. Go Quakers!

There are few things I like about winter. Cold weather and icy roads? No, thank you. Penn Men’s Basketball? YES, PLEASE! The team brought home a win from the season opener at UMBC, and they almost beat Temple in overtime in the home opener. Boy, that game was exciting! The team looked great, and the crowd welcomed the two new scoreboards in the Palestra. Before the Temple game began, Tony Kornheiser, P’08, appeared on the new big screen to make a few announcements. Yes, Tony Kornheiser. The same Tony Kornheiser who has a Quaker bobblehead behind him on his ESPN set. Kornheiser’s son played Men’s Golf at Penn. Hence, the Quaker bobblehead.

I was so excited to see Kornheiser on the big screen supporting Penn basketball, and I assumed the same video message would be played before each game. Now fast forward to the home game against Robert Morris. Before the game began, Maury Povich, C’62, appeared on the big screen wearing a red Penn t-shirt and holding a basketball. MAURY! I love that guy! I briefly sat next to him at a Penn Men’s basketball game in 2009, and now he’s back to cheer on the Quakers from the big screen.

Earlier this year, Maury donated $1 million to the Kelly Writers House to establish the Povich Fund for Journalism Programs, and now he is at the Palestra showing his support for Penn Athletics. I love seeing alumni give back to the Penn community! I can’t wait to see who makes an appearance on the big screen tonight at the Penn vs. Wagner game. Hope to see you there at 7 PM! GO QUAKERS!
