Celebrating Feb Club – 20 Years Later with Penn 1993

By Kiera Reilly, C’93  @KieraReilly

As Penn’s Class of 1993 gears up for our 20th reunion in May (that’s right, we graduated last century), we’re re-connecting with each other and making plans to reunite on campus via Email, Facebook and Twitter, things that didn’t exist when we were students! Our class Facebook page sees the most interaction, as classmates post stories and memories from our time on campus:

Princeton at Penn Men’s Basketball – now this is what my friend Chris Lehmann called “Pandemonium at the Palestra”

Penn Six singing “It Ain’t Easy Being Conrad Bain” from their 1993 album “Jacket Off” album. Jason Downie, C’93 – lead singer, Ed Matz, C’93 – lyrics

Brian Keys leading Penn Football past Lafayette – one of our first Penn football games!

“The Simpson’s” writer Matt Selman, C’93, sneaking Penn into an episode.

A recent story in The DP* highlighted the Feb Club, a tradition that our class started, thanks to our then-class president Michael “Scoops” Rosenband, C’93. Scoops sent along a page from the Friars directory highlighting his – and our class’ – contribution to fun times in February.

Alyssa Newman, C’93,  shared this photo of the Feb Club t-shirt – the rules were that if you attended 10 out of the 11 events, you received a Feb Club t-shirt (this year’s seniors are offering an event each day). Back in the day, a free t-shirt was nothing to scoff at, nor was an excuse to go out and have fun with classmates during dreary February.

If you can’t see, here’s the list of activities:

Feb 1 – Cavanaugh’s

Feb 3 – Metropolis

Feb 7 – Ferris Bueller’s Day Off at the Eric 3

Feb 9 – Smoke’s

Feb 12 – Penn Basketball vs. Columbia

Feb 16 – Cavanaugh’s

Feb 18 – Chasers

Feb 20 – Boccie

Feb 23 – Murph’s

Feb 25 – Ice Skating at the Class of 1923 Rink

Feb 28 – Smoke’s

My personal favorites were watching Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and ice skating at the Class of 1923 Ice Rink – something I had never done before.

Julie Berliner Bell, C’93, saved her Feb Club shirt too – it’s part of a quilt of other favorite t-shirts.

Our class is looking forward to May when we’ll reconnect, remember and reminisce about the fun times we had while students at Penn. We have a great group of classmates helping to plan our reunion and raise funds for Dear Old Penn – see our class reunion page for the full list.

If you’re a member of our class, be sure to join our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter.

If you’re planning to attend the reunion, be sure to add your name to the hundreds of classmates already listed on our “We’re coming!” page by emailing reunion co-chairs Lisa Nass Grabelle, C’93, L’96, or Chrissy Bass Hofbeck, C’93.

And, don’t forget to contribute to our Class Gift! We’re hoping to increase the number of participants that donate to Penn – please make your gift today!

Hurrah, Hurrah,

Penn Class of 1993!

We can’t wait to see you back on campus in May!

*The DP states the tradition started in 1997 in this article, and was recently re-instituted in 2004. We respectfully beg to differ with their account.

Hurrah, Hurrah! Zack Rosen at the Final Four!

By Kiera Reilly, C’93 (@KieraReilly)

This weekend, as Louisville and Kentucky, Ohio State and Kansas battle it out in the NCAA Final Four Men’s Basketball Championships in New Orleans, Penn Athletics teams will be playing Women’s Lacrosse, Softball, Women’s Tennis, Baseball, Men’s Lacrosse, Men’s Lightweight Rowing, Men’s Tennis, Women’s Golf and Men’s Golf. But Penn will be represented at the Final Four.

How? By virtue of Men’s Basketball senior guard and team captain Zack Rosen, who is one of ten finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. The award, “is presented each year to the outstanding senior NCAA Division I Student-Athlete of the Year across ten different sports. The acronym “CLASS” stands for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®.”

Each of the ten finalists is profiled on the award website, and you can read about why Zack was nominated here: http://www.seniorclassaward.com/athletes/zack_rosen/.

Just this week, Zack wrote an editorial published in The Daily Pennsylvanian, thanking the students for supporting the team this year. As you can see in the comments below his piece, the fans write to thank him for bringing excitement back to Penn basketball. I for one, am a huge Penn Basketball fan, and was thrilled when the team visited southern California this year (read my earlier post about the fans that came to cheer for the Quakers). When I was on campus in February, I attended the Penn-Harvard and Penn-Dartmouth games, and it felt like old times in the Palestra – a packed house with Penn alumni and students cheering loudly for our beloved Quakers. Much of that spirit is thanks to Zack Rosen, being the best player on the court and a class act off the court.

The finalists are in New Orleans now, and participated in a service project this morning. Tomorrow, between the two final four games, the winner will be announced. In the meantime, their photos adorn a bus and a hotel in New Orleans. Pretty cool to see a Penn player receive some well-deserved national recognition.

Hurrah, Hurrah, Pennsylvania!

Family Night at the Palestra

Author: Kristina Clark

On Friday evening, February 24, I had the pleasure of hosting over 200 Penn alumni families for an event at the Palestra.  This was a first-time event for Penn Alumni, and our Family Night at the Palestra was a huge success!  The evening began just after 5 PM with children of all ages having an opportunity to shoot hoops with Penn’s women basketball team. The kids had a blast and so did the players. Following the shoot-around, and prior to the basketball team taking the court for warm-ups, families were warmly greeted by women’s head basketball coach, Mike McLaughlin.  A pre-game dinner followed, and consisted of hot dogs, pizza, pretzels, beverages and Cracker Jacks. Penn Alumni families were treated to an amazing night and the game was the icing on the cake.  Penn women took a 63-49 win over Dartmouth!

The cost to participate in the Palestra Family Night event was $5 person.  The event was sponsored by Penn Alumni and the Association of Alumnae.  We look forward to offering this event again and hope you can join us next time!

In the meantime, mark your calendars now for upcoming Penn Alumni Family Events:

Family Day at Mask & Wig – 3/17/12
40 Winks with the Sphinx – 3/30-31/12

Contact Penn Alumni Relations at 215-898-7811 for more information.

As a Penn Men’s Basketball fan, there are few greater feelings than when your beloved Quakers beat Princeton. There will be a few special guests in the student section, so be sure to come to the game! Students can pick up free tickets to the game this week on Locust Walk 11AM – 2PM. See you on Friday! The Red and Blue Crew Travels to Columbia This Friday

Author: Stephanie Y., C’08

I was thrilled to hear today that the Red and Blue Crew is going to New York City for the Penn Men’s Basketball game at Columbia University this Friday. I just finalized my long weekend travel plans, which includes going to NYC to watch the Penn Quakers crush the Columbia Lions on Friday night. Tickets are still available on the Columbia Men’s Basketball website. Last year’s game was sold out, so buy your tickets today before they sell out! The Penn alumni community always has a strong presence at the Penn @ Columbia game because there are so many Penn alumni in the NYC area. I cannot wait to see Penn student and alumni faces in the crowd cheering on the Quakers this Friday night! In the meantime, see you tonight (Jan 10th) for the Penn vs. LaSalle game at The Palestra. Go Quakers!

Penn Men’s Basketball: The Dunphy Rollout Edition

Author: Stephanie Y., C08

Penn Men’s Basketball fans can always count on The Red and Blue Crew to bring clever rollouts to the games. It looks like the students had a message for Fran Dunphy, Temple’s head coach, at the Penn vs. Temple game.

The rollout at the Penn vs. Temple Men’s Basketball game reads "Dunphy: We mustache you a question, but we'll shave it for later. #NoShaveNovember.”

The rollouts can be quite competitive and mean-spirited sometimes, but The Red and Blue Crew keeps it tame and tasteful when it comes to Coach Dunphy. Dunphy was head coach of Penn’s Men’s Basketball from 1989 to 2006. He won 10 Ivy League titles in his 17-year career at Penn before he went on to be head coach at Temple. He did so much for the basketball program at Penn, and he will always be a legend in the Palestra.

The next Penn Men’s Basketball game is on Wednesday, December 7 at 7 PM! Hope to see you there when Penn plays Delaware in the Palestra. Go Quakers!
