Back To Penn Fashion: Paintbrush Edition

Author: Leigh Ann P.

You know you’ve been there.  You see a notable piece of fashion – be it adorable or abomination – and you long to capture it on film, but do you dare?  Before the unsuspecting fashion plate in question walks too far ahead of you, do you have time to root around in your over-sized tote looking for your cell phone that somehow always manages to find its way to the very bottom; past old, crumpled up Wawa receipts, empty water bottles and your glasses case containing the eyewear you never bother to fish out – otherwise you wouldn’t have taken the 12 bus instead of the 21 today?  And even if you do manage to grab it in time, will you be inconspicuous enough?  Or are you a klutz who can’t keep a secret?

Maybe you’re smooth and you think you can just walk up to someone and tell her, “Hey, we’d like to photograph you for the Penn Alumni blog’s back-to-school fashion post I’m working on.”  Newsflash: this is awkward and no one will believe that you work for that illustrious online publication – that Daily Intel-Slate-NY Times-Perez Hiltonesque amalgam of the Penn Alumni community.

Which is why we are bringing you Frankly Penn’s first-ever Back To Penn Fashion post illustrated entirely in paintbrush!

First up: Last week, we saw a Penn student sitting on a bench near Locust Walk, and she was wearing a pair of clunky-heeled Mary Janes.  Mary Janes and clunky heels had a good run in the ’90s, and frankly, we welcome them back with open arms.  So long, stilettos!  You won’t find yourself interlocked with a sidewalk grate in these puppies!  Added bonus: clunky heels will change the proportion of the line of your leg, and instantly remove most traces of cankles.  This student was also wearing socks, so we are pretty sure she was going for a full-on Anthropologie look (one of our fave stores – the flagship mansion is at 18th & Walnut, if you’re interested).

Our next Back to School fashion trend we’ve noticed this September is one that has, in fact, been a perennial favorite around college campuses all across this country for at least the last half-century.  Does that make it a trend?  Probably yes, in the great scheme of things.  We call it “I Don’t Care Chic,” and we can be sure it will be around as long as all-nighter cramming sessions exist.  The psychology behind this look is one of extraordinary complication and one never knows the true impetus.  Do you really not care?  Or do you just want to look like you don’t care?  Is “not caring” an activity that requires actual effort, and isn’t it ironic when you do put effort into “not caring” because isn’t “not caring” caring?  Or perhaps it’s a comfort thing.  Personally, we would love to come to work in sweat pants!  We are glad these students are enjoying this dress code-free time in their lives.

We couldn’t write a blog post about early-fall fashion and leave out cargo shorts.  Mostly we wanted to see if we could successfully draw cargo shorts using paintbrush.  Lex Ruby Howe C’07 thinks the pockets look like little people.  We think they’re awesome.  What do you think?

The fashion trend making the biggest statement this season – and every season – on this campus are the Penn gear staples.  You can’t strut a brick on Locust Walk without spotting packs of students wearing their pride on their sleeves in their Penn sweatshirts, t-shirts, belts, ties, tote bags, hats, gym clothes, flip-flops, and more!

Join the Penn fashion movement!  You can purchase all the Penn gear your red-and-blue-bleeding heart desires on the Penn Bookstore website.  Go Quakers!

Where Were You?

Author: Leigh Ann P.

Everyone remembers where he or she was on September 11, 2001.  People love to share their stories, no matter how boring or insignificant, and I am no different:  I was a sophomore at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, and I remember my roommate, Jenn, coming in to our room from her 8 AM class and telling me a plane had flown into the World Trade Center.  I remember still being in bed at 8:46 AM when the first plane hit, so this memory means two things to me:

1. First, this is my JFK-assassination memory moment, and I will never forget it, because like Kennedy’s assassination, it changed everything for a generation of people.  My entire life is now divided into pre-9/11 and post-9/11 memories, and I sometimes make these associations without even realizing it.  (Spice Girls?  Monica Lewinsky?  “Legally Blonde”?  Pre-9/11.  “The Forgotten”?  Justin Timberlake as a solo artist?  “Lost”?  Post-9/11).  The innocence of the last century and the nostalgia I have for it are not simply coincidental.   My entire adult life has been and will always be post-9/11, defined by that most terrifying day; naïveté must be replaced by paranoia out of sheer necessity – not just because I’m now an adult, but because I’m an adult in a post-9/11 world.

2. Second, there was a time in my life when I was able to sleep past 9 AM on a weekday.

The Daily Pennsylvanian has a great interactive piece with “Where Were You?” stories from current Penn students.  I write as someone who was 19 on the day of the attacks, but many of these men and women were merely 7 or 8 years old on that day.  It is interesting to read about that day from a child’s perspective, and how the situation took on new meanings as they matured.

The DP also profiles five of Penn’s 16 fallen alumni in a touching piece found here.

Tell us in the comments where you were on 9/11/01.

To Penn in Ten: My Journey From LOLCats to Sweeten

Author: Leigh Ann P.
It’s true that a person can become quite bored with her morning commute, so it’s always nice to pause and try to appreciate the little things you see along the way.  This is my daily journey.

The hardest part of my morning is bidding farewell to Franco, who I adopted from the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). Here he is pictured in his post-breakfast coma. He is pretty devastated when I have to leave.

I live on Spruce Street just below Rittenhouse Square. I absolutely love this neighborhood, even on a dark, muggy morning such as this.

I do get the opportunity to walk through the park every day on my way to the bus stop. Follow that little white dog!

That object in the distance is the bus I frequently miss.

Hooray! I can always count on SEPTA to send another bus along straight away.

Wow, the sun has come out so quickly! It’s almost as if this picture wasn’t taken on the same day! The Schuylkill River and its sedimentary deposits look lovely this morning. In the distance you will see the beginning stages of a bridge that will connect the riverside park to South Street!

Can you believe how well this picture came out since it was taken on a moving bus? I know I can’t! I have enjoyed watching Penn Park evolve from a construction site into the multi-functional park facility you see before you. The grand opening of Penn Park will take place on Saturday, September 17th from 4 – 6 PM. Be there for fun, games and excitement!

Usually, I pull the cord too early and the bus ends up stopping at 33rd and Walnut, a block ahead of where I need to be. I am just so eager to get to work and see my friends at Sweeten.

Off the bus at 34th and Locust Walk, and already planning my lunchtime visit to get a Magic Meatball from this cart. Or perhaps I’ll go there for a second breakfast. The day has so many culinary possibilities.

Oh, hello there! The Button has been under protective wraps all summer while construction has been going on all around it. It revealed itself recently just in time for the new school year. And what’s that in the distance? Sweeten Alumni House, my home during the work day. Have a great Monday, everyone.

Celeb-Spotting: Quaker Edition!

Author: Leigh Ann P.

Although I have never actually encountered a living, breathing celebrity, I have probably spent years of my life studying them, reading about how they’re just like me! in US Weekly, and filling my tiny, mushy brain with pointless facts that no normal person would ever, ever need.  The only scenario in which this information is useful is when Jeopardy! is on, and I will definitely know the question to the answer, “The Miss Missouri sister of this Gossip Girl actor is married to the Dallas Cowboy Tony Romo.”  (Question: Who is Chace Crawford?).

If I wanted to really challenge you, I could have made that answer: “The Miss Missouri sister of this Gossip Girl actor is married to the former boyfriend of the sister of the estranged wife of the bassist for a band named after a comic book character within the cartoon The Simpsons.”  This is a reference to the connection between Chace Crawford, Candice Crawford, Tony Romo, Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson, Pete Wentz, and Fallout Boy, as well as an indicator that I have supremely missed my calling as some sort of psycho celebrity expert.  Do those exist in professional settings?

This is why I get so excited at the prospect of any further connection to celebrities in the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon that is my life.  Since I started working here at Penn, I am merely two degrees away from the lovely 30 Rock actress Elizabeth Banks, C’96, and I cannot tell you how excited that makes me.  The one degree between us recently revealed to me that “Liz” Banks is “wicked ticklish.”  WHAT.  How does he know???  New York Magazine has a great feature on her that reveals that she met her husband on their first day of freshman year at Penn.  Cute!  I mean, shoot.  I just forgot the last bit of AP Calculus I had in my head now that I know that fact.

I spent some time on everyone’s favorite – and probably often inaccurate, but always entertaining – online encyclopedia to discover more Penn Alumni celebs.  Let’s look at a few highlights and learn a little bit about their time as students at Penn, shall we?

Candice Bergen

Candice was a member of the now-dormant Penn chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority (never dormant in this blogger’s heart, sister!).  And before she was Queen of CBS prime time, at Penn Candice was elected Miss University and Homecoming Queen!

Tory Burch

Tory was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and majored in art history at Penn.  She is a gifted and successful designer and for a current generation of young fashionistas, her initial logo is as recognizable as Coco Chanel’s.

Andrea Mitchell

While at Penn, Andrea majored in English and was the director of WXPN.  I know when she’s reporting on a story for The Today Show, I can count on her to deliver serious and hard-hitting news about issues that affect us all.  And then a story will follow featuring Matt Lauer interviewing a 4-year-old who had her lemonade business privileges revoked by the Des Moines police department, which is a story I welcome with equally open arms.

Maury Povich

What notable Penn alum list would be complete without Maury?  I.  Love.  Maury.  There are plenty of reasons to love Maury, including but not limited to the fact that he recently donated a very generous $1 million to the Kelly Writers House.  You ARE the donor!  I guess I couldn’t find any information about his time as a student, but if you’re that curious, you can try this helpful website.

Melissa Rivers

Apparently Melissa was a founding member of the Tabard Society, an off-campus secret society for women.  I wonder if Wikipedia can tell us any more secrets about this secret society!

In related news, did you ever notice how clicking around on Wikipedia will always – eventually – lead you to Henry VIII‘s page?  Or am I the only one to whom this happens?  Let us know about the crazy places you’ve ended up on Wiki in the comments section!

I might be famous one day. Were you nice to me?

Consequence-Free Burrito is No Urban Legend; Lives and Thrives in Our Nation’s Youth

Author: Leigh Ann P.

If my mom had suggested to my 14-year-old self that it would be a good idea for me to spend the summer at venture capitalist camp at Wharton, I would have groaned, “Ugh, MOM!” and stomped back up to the roof to work on my tan sunburn. What is it with parents and their lack of understanding?

These days, when July rolls around on Penn’s campus, I am amazed at the go-getter high school students that infiltrate Locust Walk. It’s amazing to me that these kids have the ambition and the intellectual wherewithal to take advantage of their summer months further educating themselves and getting a leg up in advance of the college admission process.

When I was 14, I was thinking about three things: “When I will get my braces off?” “Do I have food stuck in my braces?” and, “What time do the ‘Hey, Dude’ reruns come on Nickelodeon in the afternoons? Am I too old to still be watching ‘Hey, Dude’?” I guess technically that was four things.

What’s really great about having all the high schoolers on campus is that the salad line at Houston Hall is so much shorter than during the regular school year, even when it’s shoulder-to-shoulder traffic down there. Remember when you were a teenager and could eat a steady diet of pizza, burritos and pasta without any consequences? Yeah, me neither. Enjoy your digestive freedom while it lasts, kids.

No salad for me ... not until I'm old like the Alumni Relations staff members.

I laugh in the face of grease and cheese!

Study Confirms: Stuffed Penn Teddy Bears Are Adorable

By: Leigh Ann Preston

In a recent study performed by scientists at the Penn Alumni Relations office, experts confirmed that when promised a chance at winning an adorable, cuddly Penn Teddy bear simply by registering for events online, Penn Alumni were 67% more likely to follow through and register for said online events.

“I never thought I could win a Penn Teddy bear.  It’s like all of my dreams are amalgamating into one soothing package of fluffiness.  And all I had to do was sign up for my reunion online?” says one Penn Alum, who chose to remain anonymous.

“Seriously, the Penn Alumni Relations people know what they’re doing,” added another alum.  “I’ve heard of prizes as motivators before, but at this point I really think a Penn Teddy bear would be the only thing that could get me to do anything.  I wish my employer would pay me in direct deposit Penn Teddy bears.”

“We’ve really never seen anything like it before,” says the Assistant Vice President of Prizes and Giveaways.  “We used to promise Apple products to randomly selected registrants, and we only saw a small increase in online registration.  Now that we’ve implemented the possibility of winning a Penn Teddy bear, registration has skyrocketed.”

This is an alum who is over the moon about winning a Penn Teddy bear. She is 49% happier now that she owns it.

After hours of questioning, this alum was determined to be 84% more content with life now that he owns a Penn Teddy bear.

Looking Back…The Alumni Weekend Picnic

Author: Leigh Ann P.

For some reason, people often think that university staff members are awarded the same vacation time as professors and students.  As much as some of us may daydream about this myth becoming a reality, the truth is that we work hard all year long!  While we are recovering from Alumni Weekend 2011, we are certainly not resting.  There is still much to be done to wrap up what we have accomplished this year – and we have already long been planning for Alumni Weekend 2012!  Classes that end with a 7 or a 2 – you’re next!

We are enjoying taking the time to reflect on this past Alumni Weekend through the many wonderful pictures taken throughout the weekend.  These are just a few from Saturday’s picnic.  A little – or rather, a lot – of physically manifesting weather didn’t even stop our faithful alumni from coming out and chowing down on a hot dog… or five.

This future Quaker seems to be enjoying the rain more than us folks who worked at the registration tents.  It’s a good thing we had so many buckets full of Penn buttons to deter those leaky spots!

Enjoying the day despite the rain

A little red and blue cheer goes a long way

Our Quaker Mascot made the rounds at all the reunion tents

Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah!

Proud Penn alumni from the enthusiastic Class of 2006

The Alumni Weekend Picnic was some good old family fun. We look forward to seeing everyone next year

I Remember…1986

Author: Leigh Ann P.

1986 was a very special year, and not simply because it was when this blogger celebrated her 5th year of being alive (the most noteworthy occasion of an otherwise fabulous year for yours truly, of course).  A wonderful class of 1986 Penn graduates emerged from Commencement as Penn Alumni, and this weekend they will celebrate their 25th reunion during Alumni Weekend May 13-16 with nearly 600 in attendance.

I considered doing a reflection of world events in 1986 for this post, but who really wants to read about Chernobyl or the Challenger?  Not you, and certainly not me.  Let’s talk about pop culture!

When the Class of 1986 graduated, the box office rankings looked like this.  I am tickled that Steve Guttenberg makes multiple appearances on this list, but the fact that any Police Academy film ever outranked Pretty in Pink is just criminal.

  1. Short Circuit
  2. Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling
  3. Fire with Fire
  4. Blue City
  5. The Money Pit
  6. Dangerously Close
  7. Legend
  8. Wise Guys
  9. Critters
  10. Gung Ho
  11. Police Academy 3: Back in Training
  12. Pretty in Pink

Now, if there’s anything I love more than the early ‘90s pop musical oeuvre, it’s the mid-‘80s.  Dare say you, what could possibly be more audibly enjoyable than Color Me Badd?  I know.  I know.  I give you: Whitney Houston times two with a splash of “Walk Like an Egyptian.”  Let’s take a look back at the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 1986!

1. “That’s What Friends Are For”…..Dionne & Friends

2. “Walk Like An Egyptian”…..Bangles

3. “On My Own”…..Patti Labelle & Michael McDonald

4. “The Way It Is”…..Bruce Hornsby & The Range

5. “You Give Love A Bad Name”…..Bon Jovi

6. “Greatest Love Of All”…..Whitney Houston

7. “There’ll Be Sad Songs”…..Billy Ocean

8. “How Will I Know”…..Whitney Houston

9. “Kyrie”…..Mr. Mister

10. “Kiss”…..Prince & The Revolution

And lastly, who was People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive in 1986?  Hellooooo, Mark Harmon!!!

Congratulations to the Class of 1986 and to all of the Penn alumni celebrating their reunions this weekend!

Alumn-iPad

Author: Leigh Ann P.

Those of us who have worked at the registration tables at Homecoming and Alumni Weekend in the past have become all-too familiar with the archaic sounds of – what I call – the credit card stamper thingie.

*SQUEEEEEAK*CRUNCH!…. *SQUEEEEEAK*CRUNCH!

This is a device you may have seen in the early ’90s at your elementary school’s annual crawfish festival fundraiser; it’s a prehistoric adventure of capturing credit card information.  It leads to bottlenecking and sadness.

You can also pay us using clams or other shells.

If you’re like me, you may associate this level of technology with something my generation calls the Zack Morris phone.

Kelly? Meet me at the Max after school!

But not anymore!  The Penn Alumni Weekend registration team has stepped into the twentieth twenty-first century and we will be using iPads to process payments at Alumni Weekend next month.

My husband and I purchased iPads last week (thank you, anticipated tax refund!).  So far it has been money extremely well-spent.  They have drastically changed our technological lives as we know them.  I mean, look at how many tomatoes I’m growing in my Smurf Village.

The Fellowship of the Burrito

A beautiful, sunny day on campus means many things, but mainly it means it’s time to forget about that Lean Cuisine you stashed in the office mini fridge freezer section you didn’t know existed until recently, and head out to one of University City’s fabulous restaurants for a lunch break!

When we’re not working hard on relating to our alumni, we’re thinking about our next meal or snack, or emergency trip to the frozen yogurt place.  Today, that lucky lunch spot was Chip0tle, and this was our journey through campus: The Fellowship of the Burrito, and the campus elves and ogres we saw along the way.

Behold, Locust Walk!

What a beautiful tree coming back from a long winter’s rest.  Welcome, floral friends!

Oooh, Volcanic Corruption!  Wonder what that’s about.  Who cares?  It’s so fun to say:

How many licks does it take to get to the center of campus?  Mmm, Tootsie Pops.  We’re hungry.  Too bad we’re not already at Chipotle.

We won’t say who, but one of us was too lazy to walk up the incline of this bridge.  So we went around it.

So many food trucks.  So much temptation.  We yearn to stop where we are and forget about the Fellowship of the Burrito.

Ooooh, look!  A flower!

Check out all these frat houses.  We’re pretty sure we’re going to be trudging uphill for the last leg of the journey.

We have arrived!  Thank goodness a delicious meal awaits us inside.

Oh no.  What a long line!  And someone’s luggage – someone traveled even farther than we did to get here!

Spotted: Clark Kent powering up on delicious Chipotle food.  I wonder if he’s going to use his post-meal strength to turn the Earth’s rotation so we go back in time and we can eat our burritos again.

Home Sweet(en) Home.
