Freshman Dorms in 1989 (77 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

A recent post in our #93tothe25th countdown to our 25th reunion looked back at our Freshman Move-In in September, 1989. This week, we went back into our pre-digital camera archives to unearth photos of where and how we lived that first year at Penn. It is interesting to see that while everyone has their own personal style, there is a definite similarity to the rooms and the things that were in vogue in the Fall of 1989. Be sure to look closely at the photos to notice small things like original Macintosh computers, phones with cords, and the all important music posters.

Thank you to classmates Danny Bockvar, Marianne Alves Brogdale, Amy Korn Duque, Christine Lutton Foster, Brooke Hayes, Meredith Prevor-Weiss, Allison Laney Richards, and Jessica Zirkel-Rubin for sharing your photos with us!

Upper Quad

I lived on the 2nd floor of Franklin in the Upper Quad. I shared a triple with Lisa Bardfeld Shapiro and Randi Mosler, and while we were technically assigned to Franklin Hall, our triple and the one across the hall from us were separated from the rest of the Franklin rooms by fire doors. So the Brooks-Leidy Hall adopted us.

We scored a triple in the Upper Quad – room 222 Franklin! Randi, Lisa and Kiera on move-in day, 1989.

Since we had a triple room, there were two tiny single rooms and one large central room. We swapped rooms throughout the year, but for the first part of the year, I had one of the single rooms.

I think RA’s had a double-sized room all to themselves.

High Rises

Amy Korn Duque shares, “My freshman move-in day at Penn, I was assigned to a high rise on the 14th floor, sharing an apartment-style dorm with 2 girls from Colombia and one from Staten Island. (I am still in touch with 2 out of 3.) One of my roommates had gone to high school with a Wharton sophomore, who came over to help us move in and get settled. They were not particularly good friends, but we hit it off right away.  He and I have now been married for 21 years, and this year we saw our son off to Penn for his own freshman move-in day.”

Brooke Hayes sent a photo of him and his roommate Jason McLane sitting by Ben on the Bench freshman year. Brooke and Jason lived in Foerderer in Upper Quad. And then Brooke sent a photo with his daughter Cameron (and wife Hilary Marion Hayes, also a classmate) and Jason’s daughter Hannah in the same pose with Ben on the Bench. Cameron and Hannah entered Penn this year as Freshman and are roommates living in Speakman!

Danny Bockvar sent a photo of himself, his twin brother Johnny and his roommate Paul Altman (they lived in the Class of ’28) from Freshman year, and then a photo of the three of them today.

Coincidentally, while looking through the scrapbook I made from Freshman year, I found this article from the Philadelphia Inquirer about our class moving in and starting life at Penn. The best part? Paul and Johnny are quoted in the article! I wonder if Paul can tell the difference between the Bockvars now? (If you can’t read the image below, the article is online here).

We received photos from rooms in the Quad and the High Rises, but we are still seeking photos from Hill House, Kings Court/English House, DuBois or other freshman dorms. And we would love to see more photos of other rooms in the Quad and High Rises. We hope to do another post on freshman dorm rooms so if you have any photos, please send them to us!

Giving Tuesday and the Class of 1993 Giving to Penn (78 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

The Penn Fund Giving Tuesday #LovethePennFund

Today, November 29, 2016, is Giving Tuesday, a day for global giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.

On this #GivingTuesday, I encourage you to consider a donation to The Penn Fund. The Penn Class of 1993 has always been generous in giving back to Penn, and I hope we can continue that tradition, as the Penn Fund hopes to secure 500 alumni donations today.

Senior Class Gift

Our senior year, 603 classmates donated to our Senior Gift Drive, raising $14,190.02 in support of Penn and our class project, the Class of 1993 Endowed Scholarship. This was a 27% participation rate, a record-setting level of engagement (almost 150 more donors than 1992, the next closest year).

I was on the Senior Class Gift committee, and I remember the many meetings we had deciding on our class project and working to secure as many gifts as possible from fellow classmates. I found this note from our Gift Drive co-chairs Stephanie Fish and Lincoln Singleton in my pile of ’93 memories.

Letter from Senior Class Gift co-chairs Stephanie Fish and Lincoln Singleton

Stephanie shared her memories of co-chairing the Senior Class Gift Drive with Lincoln:

“I do remember working with Lincoln who was always full of energy and enthusiasm. I remember that we had great participation from our class, and I was very excited to hand over the big check on Alumni Day. I think that I felt that it was important to give back to Penn because I really had such a great four years–interesting classes, wonderful friends, and lots of new experiences. I wanted to make sure others could have that same great experience. Giving back is my way of saying thank you. It also makes it possible for the next generations to have these great opportunities.”

Reunion Giving

Since our senior year, we have continued to set records, still holding records for overall ($3million) and scholarship ($2.35million) fundraising in our 15th reunion, and unrestricted fundraising ($1.127million) in our 20th reunion. Thank you for your continued generosity to and support of Penn!

Homecoming Freshman Year and the Missing Tiger Heads (79 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

The weekend of November 4-5, 2016 marked 79 weeks until the 25th Reunion of the Penn Class of 1993 (May 11 – 13, 2018)! The weekend also marked twenty-seven years since our first Homecoming at Penn – our Freshman year – November 4, 1989.

I saved the cover of The Daily Pennsylvanian Homecoming issue in my scrapbook, and I also found a version of the issue online from the Penn library (it is worth a look, especially to see the advertisements from the likes of Lee’s Hoagie House).

Searching through my old printed photos, I found only a few pictures from Homecoming.

There are a good amount of fans on the Princeton side of Franklin Field, so I imagine the Penn side was much fuller. I like that the benches were alternating blue and red.

I do not remember anything about the game, so I searched online to find the final score. Penn lost to Princeton 30-8.

Then I also saw something about a Tiger mascot being attacked…which reminded me of an article I saved in my scrapbook – Penn fans attacked the Princeton Tiger mascots on the field and escaped with the tiger heads!

Here is the front page of the DP from November 6, 1989 with the full story (you can access archived issues of the DP online – here is the link to the November 6, 1989 issue).

President Sheldon Hackney wrote a letter to the editor of the DP about the incident.

Penn President Sheldon Hackney’s letter to the editor appeared in the November 6, 1989 issue of the DP.

I also found this story that printed in the New York Times about the incident which details that the heads were recovered with the help of the IFC President Garrett Reisman.

Does anyone else remember this? I was at the game but for the life of me cannot remember witnessing the attack on the mascot. I do remember the coverage in the DP afterwards.

Let us know what you remember from Homecoming our Freshman year – were you at the game? Do you remember the tiger being attacked?

Mid-Terms, Finals and Blue Books (80 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

The weekend of October 28-29, 2016 marked 80 weeks until the 25th Reunion of the Penn Class of 1993 (May 11 – 13, 2018)! And we continue the countdown to our reunion by looking back at memories of our time at Penn.

I have a box of old papers and things I saved, and as I sorted through it, I hoped to find ticket stubs from Penn Football and Basketball games. Or maybe those square colored paper invites to parties, or a program from a student performing art group. Surprisingly, I do not seem to have many, if any, of these items. But what I did save? My blue books from Econ 1 mid-terms and exams from our first semester of Freshman year!

Econ 1 exam blue book from the University of Pennsylvania courtesty Kiera Reilly

This must be from our first mid-term in Econ 1, first semester Freshman year.

Flipping through my answers to the exam, there are red marks with apparently the number of points I scored on each question (but no idea how much each question was worth), and a final tally of the points I earned on the exam. No final grade, or context to put the final point total.

Inside the front and back cover of each booklet is the Code of Academic Integrity, and there was a place to sign your name on the back cover.

I have not read through my answers, and probably have not looked at these books since we graduated. But I am glad I saved them, if only to vaguely remember what taking an exam was like twenty-seven years ago in the ground floor of Williams Hall.

Based on the date, this must be from a second mid-term or exam of Econ 1 from our first semester Freshman year.

Do you remember the exam blue-books? Did you save any of your exams?

The 1992 Election (82 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

The weekend of October 14-15, 2016 marked 82 weeks until the 25th Reunion of the Penn Class of 1993 (May 11 – 13, 2018)!

As the 2016 Presidential election is in full swing, we look back briefly at some of the 1992 Presidential election coverage from The Daily Pennsylvanian. This picture of an April 17, 1992 edition of the DP, shows that then-Democratic Presidential candidate Bill Clinton visited Wharton.

92election

The front page of the DP on April 17, 1992 notes Democratic Presidential Candidate Bill Clinton visiting Wharton.

Who could have guessed then that twenty-four years later, President Bill Clinton’s wife Hillary would be attending a rally on campus as the Democratic nominee for President? Secretary Clinton and her running mate Tim Kaine visited Penn Park for a rally recently, and you can read about it in The DP! I guess Pennsylvania will always be a crucial state for the Presidential election, so Penn will probably continue seeing visits by candidates hoping to be President.

Do you remember the 1992 election? We would love to share more memories from that Spring and Fall and the election that included third party candidate Ross Perot!

Freshman Move-In 1989 (83 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

Last week we looked at photos of Freshman Move-In this year. This week, we take a stroll down memory lane to moving in to Penn in the fall of 1989, our freshman year at Penn.

I saved the form for my freshman room assignment – 222 Franklin in the Upper Quad. I noticed that on most of my documents from college, my social security number is on everything (I obscured it here).

Classmate Christine Lutton Foster, C’93, who was traveling to Penn from California, shared some of her pre-move-in papers.

Freshman Move-In 2016 (84 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

I was on campus in late August and happened to be there for a Freshman Move-In Day. Penn was still Penn, but it was newer, cleaner, brighter, and seemed so different from what I remembered moving in to start our college days in the Fall of 1989.

Here are some of the sights I saw.

I arrived at 30th Street Station, which has been refurbished and looks fabulous, and walked through the Drexel Campus to Penn. Drexel has been undergoing a building boom and transformation of late, and is really buzzing.

Penn

I reached Penn at the southeast corner of 33rd and Chestnut Street. And the new College House was right in front of me, on what used to be Hill Field. The 125th Women’s Walkway cut across Hill Field a few years ago, but now there is this shiny new dormitory too. It is housing for Freshmen and had its official opening a few weeks ago.

penndormWow! This is a dorm. At. Penn. (For perspective, I’m standing on the east side of 33rd and Chestnut Streets)

The new College House is on the right as I made my way on the walkway to the center of campus.

newcollegehouse2As I continued on the walkway, I saw this table for Penn Student Agencies. I worked for PSA all four years at Penn, so I stopped to talk to this current student about the services PSA offers today.

welcome1This is when I had my, “we are in the 21st Century moment,” as I saw this student wearing a t-shirt with, “Move-in Social Media,” printed on the back.

Fisher-Bennett Hall is on the right, with the Zeta Psi Fraternity and Hill House are on the left side of Walnut Street.

walnutstreetI walked up Walnut Street to the bookstore at 36th and Walnut. All the new Penn apparel looked pretty cool (I was glad to see there wasn’t any pink or green Penn branded items that I’ve seen displayed in recent years).

I heard the band playing behind College Hall, so I walked towards Houston Hall. Families were gathered on the Perelman Quadrangle benches that lead up to Claudia Cohen Hall (known as Logan Hall when we were students). Williams Hall is on the left.

wynn-commonsThere was a large tent between Houston Hall and College Hall. There were bins for bottles of water, Tasty Kakes and soft pretzels. The Penn Band played for the families.

pennbandInside Houston Hall was a fare of services for students.

Later in the afternoon, new students and families gathered on College Green to hear Provost Price and President Gutmann. The Glee Club was singing a Penn medley while everyone waited for the Provost and President.

I walked over to Spruce Street to the Quad. There was some activity, but as it was later in the day, I think most of the move-in rush was finished before I arrived.

wistarWalking west on Spruce Street, I was surprised by the Wistar Institute building. For my last few visits to campus this was covered in netting and scaffolding.

It was nice to see the food trucks lined up outside the Quad (see our Food Truck post).

foodtruckThere were still some students and families moving in to the Quad.

cartsWhile the carts seem nicer than when we moved in so many years ago, they seem to be the same basic structure.

quad3I walked down Locust Walk. Classes had not started yet, so it was a bit quiet.

locustwalkBen on the Bench is still on campus, but he’s moved to the corner of 36th Street and Locust Walk. He sits on 36th Street, outside of Steinberg-Dietrich Hall. I heard that it’s a right of passage now for students to pee on the bench. Was that a thing when we were students?

benbenchAs I continued down Locust Walk, I saw the former home of the Palladium. It was sad that the patio isn’t full of people sitting at tables, enjoying a drink and soaking up the beautiful day.

Tuition Then and Now (85 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

Last weekend, September 23-24, 2016 marked 85 weeks until the 25th Reunion of the Penn Class of 1993 (May 11 – 13, 2018)! I recently discovered a Scrapbook I made of things from Freshman year. One item was the breakdown of tuition costs for the 1989 – 1990 school year.

93_I know that the cost of Penn has increased, but by how much? Thanks to Google, I found the tuition for this academic year pretty easily on the Penn Student Financial Services website.

93_screenshotComparing the total cost in 1989 – 1990 ($20,850) with the total cost in 2016 – 2017 ($69,340), I wondered how that 1989-1990 academic year price tab would compare using inflation rates. According to this CPI Inflation Calculator, the amount of expenses in 1989 would be equivalent to $40,463.63 today.

Of course, all of this talk of tuition makes me think of one of my favorite Mask and Wig songs, “Tuition.” Here is a clip from Freshman Performing Arts Night in 2006.

New Student Week…(86 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

This weekend, September 16-17, 2016, marks 86 weeks until the 25th Reunion of the Penn Class of 1993 (May 11 – 13, 2018)! Follow along with us we countdown the weeks to our reunion #93tothe25th: Follow us on Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram. Classmates are invited to join our Facebook and LinkedIn groups.

New Student Week (NSW) for the Penn Class of 1989 was twenty-seven years ago this week, so we are looking back at the first week we were at Penn.

I do not remember much about NSW, but I do still have my NSW t-shirt and a NSW pin. Here I am sporting my NSW t-shirt (remember how our t-shirts had to be super long to be stylish?) at a Brooks-Leidy hall brunch in the Upper Quad.

93_86_1Christine Lutton Foster, C’93, shared her NSW order form.

93_86_2Amy Korn Duque, C’93, G’93, found the original NSW brochure.

93_86_393_86_4Amy had a copy of the campus map from 1989. Notice building number 49 circled – Logan Hall. It has since been renamed and current students know it as Claudia Cohen Hall. Number 34 Hill House is currently closed for renovation, and across “Hill Field” is the new college house that opened this week.

Amy shared a brochure for Houston Hall. Have you visited Houston Hall recently? All of these stores are no longer there.

93_86_7In contrast to these old documents, I looked for the New Student Week information for this year. It’s now called New Student Orientation, and all the events are listed on the web, but there was also a pretty colorful brochure online. Wow, look at all the offerings for new Penn students!

93_86_893_86_9Things have definitely changed. It makes our New Student Week brochure look so last century (ack)!
