Senior Week 1993

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

As many photos as we have shared in our #93tothe25th countdown posts, many more have been shared in our Class Facebook group. And everyone is also being reflective.

Eliza Schleifstein wrote:

When I talk about my four years at Penn, I still say it is the best four years of my life, despite 13 years at a private school, 20 years of marriage and two children. Given that my kids now view some of my Penn friends as closer to them than their own family and call their kids their cousins, it just makes sense. No matter where you go, Penn alumni seem to all say the same thing, and you do not hear it from other schools.

Jennifer Jarett shared:

I have to admit, a little over five years ago, I was on the fence about attending our 20th reunion. Susan Baranovsky West, charmer that she is, convinced me to go. I ended up having a wonderful time catching up with old friends and making a new friend in Rob Williams! It was such a delightful weekend that when I came back, I immediately tried to find out how to volunteer for the 25th reunion. So I have been looking forward to this for a pretty long time! And now, over the past few weeks, with everyone sharing all of their photos and memories (thank you to all the class hoarders who still have so many tickets and fliers and t-shirts!!!), I am overflowing with excitement!! I can’t wait to see you all!

Caren Lissner added:

May we all make new friends. I keep seeing so many photos that remind me just how many people I *didn’t* know in my class…but there were 5,000 undergrads in our school, so it’s logical we never crossed paths with some.

And Amanda Rykoff chimed in:

The best part about the Penn community is that we share that bond no matter what class and even if we didn’t know each other while we were at Penn. Some of my best friends are Penn alumni I didn’t know when I was there or who graduated well after me but we had that bond. All roads lead to Penn. Looking forward to seeing everyone next weekend!

And now back to reminiscing about our Senior Week back in 1993.

Our Senior Class board planned a week of events for us.

Trying to Remember Feb Club

By the 1993 Senior Class Board

Five years ago as we prepared to celebrate our 20th Reunion, we wrote a post about Feb Club, a now annual senior year tradition started by our Senior Class Board (you can read that post here: Celebrating Feb Club – 20 Years Later with Penn 1993).

Now we wondered, how did Feb Club begin? We asked the Senior Class Board for more insight, and they responded in an email chain…

Brooke Hays, W’93, WG’99

I actually came up with the idea for Feb Club because I felt bad for the Deke guys who couldnt get anyone to go out with them.  So we convinced seniors to go out every night. The T-shirts helped the Deke guys fit in at the parties.

Laurie Bieber, C’93, GEd’94

Funny man you are, Brooke Hayes!

I honestly don’t remember the details.  Anyone?

Lisa (Luther) Housel, NU’93

Ha! Brooke!! Good to see you haven’t lost your sense of humor after all these years!

I don’t really remember any of the details either- glad to see I’m not the only one 🙂

Only thing I remember is trying to coordinate our schedules so at least one of us was able attend every event that month to manage things. Turned into quite a busy social schedule for all of us. Also have no idea how we ever got anything done before email and cell phones to help with communication. Lots of in-person meetings I guess! Fun times with a great team!

Elissa Laitin, ENG’93

I totally remember that the idea was a spin-off of DKE’s Feb Club. We didn’t go out every night – it was like 11-12 events during the month.

We also had a raffle to help incentivize people to come to all the events. I think it was a $100 cash prize and people were only eligible if they came to at least 10 of the 11 events, or something like that. So then we had to manually track everyone who came to every event….

One of the things that was great about it was that there were a bunch of non-bar events like ice skating, movie night, and a basketball game – and that brought out a lot of seniors who didn’t come to other things b/c they wanted social events that weren’t just about drinking.

Boy this is bringing up a lot of memories! And now I’m getting Senior Week flashbacks.  Just don’t ask me what I did last weekend – that, I don’t remember….

Chrissy Bass Hofbeck, C’93

I just went in the attic to dig out my old Penn planner in hopes of finding the Feb Club schedule. Unfortunately the only thing tucked into my planner was a photo from Spring Break in Jamaica.

That said, I remember there were 3 events per week for a total of 12. I think you needed to go to 10 of the 12 to get a t-shirt. And yes, we had equal numbers (or so) of bar versus non-bar events. So we are all having the same recollection of events. I remember having our Board meetings in Brooke’s room at Sigma Chi.

Those were good times. Hope to see you all at the reunion in May. Hard to believe it’s been 25 years.

Jenn Spadano-Gasbarro, C’93

I am so impressed with all you guys remember. I can remember neither what I did this past weekend nor the details of Feb club except that it was an idea borrowed from Deke. I do, however, have pictures…

Freshman Dorms in 1989 (77 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

A recent post in our #93tothe25th countdown to our 25th reunion looked back at our Freshman Move-In in September, 1989. This week, we went back into our pre-digital camera archives to unearth photos of where and how we lived that first year at Penn. It is interesting to see that while everyone has their own personal style, there is a definite similarity to the rooms and the things that were in vogue in the Fall of 1989. Be sure to look closely at the photos to notice small things like original Macintosh computers, phones with cords, and the all important music posters.

Thank you to classmates Danny Bockvar, Marianne Alves Brogdale, Amy Korn Duque, Christine Lutton Foster, Brooke Hayes, Meredith Prevor-Weiss, Allison Laney Richards, and Jessica Zirkel-Rubin for sharing your photos with us!

Upper Quad

I lived on the 2nd floor of Franklin in the Upper Quad. I shared a triple with Lisa Bardfeld Shapiro and Randi Mosler, and while we were technically assigned to Franklin Hall, our triple and the one across the hall from us were separated from the rest of the Franklin rooms by fire doors. So the Brooks-Leidy Hall adopted us.

We scored a triple in the Upper Quad – room 222 Franklin! Randi, Lisa and Kiera on move-in day, 1989.

Since we had a triple room, there were two tiny single rooms and one large central room. We swapped rooms throughout the year, but for the first part of the year, I had one of the single rooms.

I think RA’s had a double-sized room all to themselves.

High Rises

Amy Korn Duque shares, “My freshman move-in day at Penn, I was assigned to a high rise on the 14th floor, sharing an apartment-style dorm with 2 girls from Colombia and one from Staten Island. (I am still in touch with 2 out of 3.) One of my roommates had gone to high school with a Wharton sophomore, who came over to help us move in and get settled. They were not particularly good friends, but we hit it off right away.  He and I have now been married for 21 years, and this year we saw our son off to Penn for his own freshman move-in day.”

Brooke Hayes sent a photo of him and his roommate Jason McLane sitting by Ben on the Bench freshman year. Brooke and Jason lived in Foerderer in Upper Quad. And then Brooke sent a photo with his daughter Cameron (and wife Hilary Marion Hayes, also a classmate) and Jason’s daughter Hannah in the same pose with Ben on the Bench. Cameron and Hannah entered Penn this year as Freshman and are roommates living in Speakman!

Danny Bockvar sent a photo of himself, his twin brother Johnny and his roommate Paul Altman (they lived in the Class of ’28) from Freshman year, and then a photo of the three of them today.

Coincidentally, while looking through the scrapbook I made from Freshman year, I found this article from the Philadelphia Inquirer about our class moving in and starting life at Penn. The best part? Paul and Johnny are quoted in the article! I wonder if Paul can tell the difference between the Bockvars now? (If you can’t read the image below, the article is online here).

We received photos from rooms in the Quad and the High Rises, but we are still seeking photos from Hill House, Kings Court/English House, DuBois or other freshman dorms. And we would love to see more photos of other rooms in the Quad and High Rises. We hope to do another post on freshman dorm rooms so if you have any photos, please send them to us!

Giving Tuesday and the Class of 1993 Giving to Penn (78 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

The Penn Fund Giving Tuesday #LovethePennFund

Today, November 29, 2016, is Giving Tuesday, a day for global giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.

On this #GivingTuesday, I encourage you to consider a donation to The Penn Fund. The Penn Class of 1993 has always been generous in giving back to Penn, and I hope we can continue that tradition, as the Penn Fund hopes to secure 500 alumni donations today.

Senior Class Gift

Our senior year, 603 classmates donated to our Senior Gift Drive, raising $14,190.02 in support of Penn and our class project, the Class of 1993 Endowed Scholarship. This was a 27% participation rate, a record-setting level of engagement (almost 150 more donors than 1992, the next closest year).

I was on the Senior Class Gift committee, and I remember the many meetings we had deciding on our class project and working to secure as many gifts as possible from fellow classmates. I found this note from our Gift Drive co-chairs Stephanie Fish and Lincoln Singleton in my pile of ’93 memories.

The Penn Fund Class of 1993 Senior Class Gift at the University of Pennsylvania

Letter from Senior Class Gift co-chairs Stephanie Fish and Lincoln Singleton

Stephanie shared her memories of co-chairing the Senior Class Gift Drive with Lincoln:

“I do remember working with Lincoln who was always full of energy and enthusiasm. I remember that we had great participation from our class, and I was very excited to hand over the big check on Alumni Day. I think that I felt that it was important to give back to Penn because I really had such a great four years–interesting classes, wonderful friends, and lots of new experiences. I wanted to make sure others could have that same great experience. Giving back is my way of saying thank you. It also makes it possible for the next generations to have these great opportunities.”

Reunion Giving

Since our senior year, we have continued to set records, still holding records for overall ($3million) and scholarship ($2.35million) fundraising in our 15th reunion, and unrestricted fundraising ($1.127million) in our 20th reunion. Thank you for your continued generosity to and support of Penn!
