On the Approach of Fall

Author: Aimee LaBrie

It’s ninety degrees today, and so the start of the fall semester seems off; summer can’t possibly be over already. Maybe it’s true that the older you get, the swifter time moves, because it feels like we just celebrated Alumni Weekend, and yet, here we are, just days away from Convocation.  Over the last week, new students have started arriving in droves to take part in New Student Orientation, the bookstore is flooded with returning students, and the line at the coffee shop stretches out to the street.

I want to tell the new students to take it easy; savor this short time before classes start, don’t fall in love with the first boy you meet at Hey Day, don’t rush to give up the better side of your dorm to your new roommate (she may seem sweet with her Southern accent and big red hair bows, but she will to turn on a dime).  Take your time when picking your confidantes, leave campus once in a while to see the rest of Philadelphia, buy lunch from the food trucks instead of Houston Hall, and, above all, eschew the idea that you need to take an 8 AM class. You do not.  Of course, I don’t say anything, but instead watch them and feel just slightly bit envious that for most of them them, time still stretches and they ache to get on with it.

What’s Happening at Penn this Summer?

Author: Joshua Durando

With the craziness of the academic year behind us and only a few weeks left before the frenzy of a new school year starts, I decided to take a walk around campus today to see what’s going on. While my summer has been a tad slow, the campus is still abuzz with activity, with new construction happening all over campus.

ArchIf you’ve visited Sweeten Alumni House recently, the scene above might look familiar to you. The renovations on The ARCH are coming along nicely.

If you continue just down Walnut Street, you’ll encounter another large project: the new Nanotechnology building.

Both spaces are going to be absolutely beautiful and will undoubtedly aid in making campus even more dynamic.

Have you made your plans to see all that’s new and happening at Penn over Homecoming Weekend? It’s never to soon to start planning for Homecoming Weekend featuring arts & culture, happening November 8 through the 10, 2013. You can keep up with the most up-to-date information here. Hope to see you all there!

For the “Red” in the Red and the Blue

Author: Marvin Rocha, C’06

Today is a “Red Day” on Penn’s campus. During the hot summer days, the amount of energy that Penn uses peaks. Employees, faculty, and staff across the University receive an email that asks them to reduce the demand they are putting on the grid during “Red Days.”

Through a coordinated effort, all 216 _ buildings on Penn’s 302 acre campus dim: window blinds are shut, lights in offices and hallways are turned off all together, computer screen brightness is lessened, unused appliances are unplugged, and most importantly, air conditioning units are strategically cycled-off.

The savings from one person’s working space are multiplied many times over and allows Penn to use resources in better ways—which is awesome when you consider what other things (like Financial Aid) are funded by the simple act of thousands of people at Penn turning off a light switch. Considering this, I don’t mind sending emails (or writing a blog post for Frankly Penn) in the dark.

A Hot Day at the Morris Arboretum

Author: Lillian Gardiner, GEd’11

Morris Arboretum, owned by Penn, is 92 acres of lush gardens about 30 minutes north of the University. After 3 years of telling myself I should go see it, I finally made the trek out there on July 4.

I was blown away by the beauty and peacefulness of the place. There were art displays throughout, along with rose gardens, a swan pond, a log cabin, and a toy train exhibit. Check out their website for upcoming classes, lectures and events. Penn Card Holders get in for free, so no excuses!

That’s me! Just chillin’ in the canopy 50ft above ground.

Hamilton Walk in the Summertime

Author: Stephanie Yee, C08

When I’m walking around campus, sometimes I stop and think, “This is the life.” We are so lucky to have such a beautiful campus. The sunshine, exquisite architecture, and perfectly green trees make summers at Penn so wonderful. Here is a snapshot of a perfect summer afternoon. Hamilton Walk is usually crowded with students rushing to and from classes, but it’s calm and quiet during the summertime. The Leidy Laboratories of Biology is on the left, and you can see a little bit of The Quad on the right. Seriously, this is the life.

Happy Fourth of July from Penn Alumni

Author: Aimee LaBrie

Here’s an idea to start your holiday weekend:  why not plan your summer vacation around a visit back to Penn? I challenge you to return to  campus for a family photo scavenger hunt–get a picture of your dog on the Button, your child in the “O” of the LOVE Statue, you fleeing across Locust Walk, pursued by the numerous aggressive squirrels that dominate the green.  These are just some ideas; you can take photos of whatever you like as long as you show that you’re at Penn. Then, send the pictures to me at alabrie@upenn.edu and I’ll post them here.

In the interim, please enjoy a few pictures of Penn campus, courtesy of University Communications, and have a safe and happy Fourth of July!

Goodbye to Our Ivy Plus Friends

Author: Aimee LaBrie

Today was the last day of the Ivy Plus conference, and we wish all of our visiting travelers safe journeys home. I learned so much over the last three days during the panels and in just casual conversations over drinks or lunch. I don’t want to lose that connection with all of these very smart, creative, and friendly people. I hope that you will all stay in touch throughout the year.

One of our final moments was to present the Ivy Plus awards for Alumnipics 2014. Each winner received a bronze (Cornell), silver (Princeton), or gold (Dartmouth) Quaker bobblehead.

BobbleHeads (2)

Let’s continue the conversations, the competitions, and the collaborations as we continue on throughout the year and start to look forward to Ivy Plus 2014 at Brown University (#IvyPlusAR).

Penn Co-Rec Intramural Summer Softball

Author:  Stephanie Yee, C’08

Penn co-rec intramural summer softball is back! Penn Park is a beautiful place to play softball, but sometimes the Philly weather doesn’t cooperate. Check out the photos below from the Tuesday and Thursday games last week.

Bio Pond, Worth the Walk

Author: Lillian Gardiner, GEd’11

If you need a destination for your lunch time walks this summer, or are looking for a quiet place to sit and read, check out what is commonly referred to as the Bio Pond. It’s actually named Kaskey Park on the Penn campus map.

I stumbled upon it on a recent walk. I had heard about it but I never go that far south while on campus. Like many things off the beaten path, this one is well worth visiting.

This turtle, Delilah, lives at the Bio pond with her many friends. She shares the space with Hugo, the gigantic gold fish.

See Delilah sunning on her rock. Duffy the duck also lives here with his family.

So much more to see–these are just two of the idyllic moments I had on this enjoyable trip.
