Friendships Formed in the Quad (56 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93, and Ebru Ural, W’93

As we continue counting down the 93 weeks to our 25th reunion next May, I asked fellow classmates to dig through their boxes, sort through their photos, and rack their brains for mementos, photos and memories to share of our time at Penn.

While searching for Hey Day photos, Ebru Ural, W’93, found this photo.

Friends made in the Quad at Penn in the early 90's

Jeff Liebert, EAS ’93, Ulrich Kausch, EAS’94, Eric Cheng, C’93, Justin Sowers, EAS ’93, and Alan Steenstrup, C’92

I asked Ebru how these friends all met, and here is what she wrote:

We were a true motley crew, a really great group of friends who all met as freshman neighbors in the Quad.  Justin, Eric, and Jeff all lived in Craig ’87 in the same hall.  I lived around the bend in Ware. Alan was a year ahead of us but probably is singularly responsible for bringing me into this group.

Starting with the superhero is Jeff Liebert EAS ’93 from Ronkokoma Long Island, then Ulrich Kausch…EAS ’94 from Germany, Eric Cheng Col’93 from Hong Kong, Justin Sowers EAS ’93 from New Mexico, and napping is Alan Steenstrup Col ’92 from Kenya…and me W’93 originally from Istanbul, Turkey.

To me this photo epitomizes the gifts of living in the Quad…lifelong friendships, laughs, and diversity.

That about sums it up doesn’t it?

Hey Deja Vu (57 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

We’re a bit behind in our weekly countdown postings, but as today, April 27, is Hey Day for the Class of 2018 on campus, I thought I would flash back to experiencing Hey Day as Seniors. We copied a “tradition” that the Class of 1992 started – Hey Deja Vu. While the Juniors had their fun in red shirts, we went to Smokes for a Screamer, then watched them parade down Locust Walk, and then returned to Smokes to end the night.

I do remember the Class of ’92 having dark blue t-shirts (in contrast to the red Hey Day shirts), but I do not recall our class having shirts. Does anyone remember?

Here is an ad from the DP the I saved for our Hey Deja Vu.

Hey-Deja Vu ad in the Daily Pennsylvanian for the Penn Class of 1993

The DP ad for Hey-Deja Vu our senior year, on April 23, 1993.

In searching through the archives of The Daily Pennsylvanian, I did find the Hey Deja Vu ads for the Class of 1992 (the Class of 1992 is celebrating their 25th reunion this May 12-15, 2017).

The only other mentions I could find for Hey Deja Vu were for the Class of 1996, so I assume the tradition continued at least through then.

The DP Joke Issue (58 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

Remember picking up your issue of The Daily Pennsylvanian as you left the High Rises, or walked through Steiny-D? And once a year the stories seemed not quite right? The annual DP Joke issue always caused a stir, with some stories seeming plausible enough to be real, so that the other stories that were truly off-the-wall were believed.

I searched The DP’s archives to find the Joke Issues for our time at Penn. But since the issues weren’t called “joke issue” in the paper, I only found one so far, the one from our senior year, which was published on March 30, 1993.

The joke stories on the front page:

  • Hackeny Nixed for NEH Post
  • Seinfeld to Speak to Grads
  • U. May Sell Off High Rises
  • Dorms to be Wired for Burglar Alarms
  • First Daughter Sues “Street”

Student Bands at Fling (59 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

Last week’s post shared a ticket from a Spring Fling concert in 1990 – the Air Band Contest. This week, I am sharing some photos I found from Spring Fling in 1991, the “Wild Fling.”

Lower Quad during Spring Fling at Penn 1991

The band performing here is Chaos Theory, which I am pretty sure was a band of Penn students. As you can tell from the photos, I apparently was a bit obsessed with the lead singer. Anyone else want to admit that too?

It wasn’t all about Chaos Theory. I did find this other photo of another student band. Judging by the lack of a crowd, my guess is that they performed early in the day, while most people were still sleeping.

Spring Fling Concerts (60 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

It’s Spring Fling this weekend at Penn, which is interesting as it’s the weekend before the final weeks of classes (and thus also the weekend before Hey Day). Were our Flings so close to the end of the semester? I honestly don’t remember.

I remember having fun at Spring Fling, but I don’t remember the concerts much. I managed to save a ticket for the Air Band concert from 1990’s Fling, but I’m not even sure what that was!

Do you remember any Fling concerts?

Here’s the schedule for Fling in the Quad this year. I hope all the students have fun!

Cheering for Women’s Basketball at the Big Dance in LA

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

It started with a direct message on twitter on Monday afternoon, March 13th. Philly.com’s Big 5 Basketball reporter (and Penn and DP alumnus) Jonathan Tannenwald, sent me a message, “Get to the women’s selection show asap. That’s all I can say for now.”

What was he talking about? A quick search on the internet, and I soon knew – the Penn Women’s Basketball team was headed to Los Angeles for the NCAA Women’s Basketball tournament!

Penn was seeded 12th in the Bridgeport (Connecticut) Regional and was set to play fifth-seeded Texas A&M in the first round at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion on Saturday, March 18.

The next morning, I connected with my classmate Mitchell Kraus, C’93, and we simultaneously purchased our tickets for the game in the Penn section from Penn athletics. We were going to cheer for the Quakers at the Big Dance in Los Angeles!

I posted on my Facebook page about the game, and in our class Facebook group, and soon another classmate, Jodilynn Baird Styner, W’93, had purchased game tickets as well.

On the day of the game, Penn Athletics hosted a pre-game reception, and I was happy to see fellow fans Jordan Rockwell, C’00, and his wife Julie, and Harry Rosenberg, W’79, and his wife Laurie Sayet. After toasting Penn and the Quakers, we walked over to Pauley Pavilion for the start of the game.

Jordan and I were excited to see the display at Pauley with the four teams competing in the first round there – and posed by the Penn Athletics logo.

And then we bumped into the Quaker!

The Quaker is in Los Angeles!

We were excited to see that the Penn Band and Penn Cheer made the trip to Los Angeles too.

Soon, the players were being announced and the game was underway.

And what a game it was. For three quarters, Penn dominated the game. And then Texas A&M turned things around with just over eight minutes left to play and won the game 63-61. For a complete re-cap of the game, you can read more from Penn Athletics.

While the Quakers lost, we were thrilled to watch them play in Los Angeles. This was Penn’s third NCAA Tournament appearance in four years, and this year was a successful season. The team won the inaugural Ivy League Tournament with a win over Princeton, and won the Ivy League regular season title with a 13-1 record and were 22-7 overall. Junior Michelle Nwokedi was named the Ivy League Player of the Year.

Here are some photos and thoughts from fellow Quaker fans at the game. Let’s give a big Hurrah, Hurrah to the Women’s Basketball team! #FightonPenn

“We all wish the game would have ended differently, but it was still a lot of fun to see the team play — not to mention the Quaker and the band! Especially for those of us who can’t get back to Philadelphia very often, it was an exciting opportunity for us to show our Penn pride here at home.”  ~Aileen Level, C’99, GED’00
“Well although the team lost, the band sounded great and is still undefeated.”
~Mitchell Kraus, C’93

“I loved seeing the Penn Women’s Basketball team at the NCAA game at Pauley Pavilion. Having grown up in Los Angeles, it was a special treat to hear, “The Red and the Blue,” and watch the Penn Band in my hometown. I felt proud to be in the stands with my Penn t-shirt on cheering! Go Quakers!”  ~Lisa Niver, C’89

“I am very proud of our team for their achievements! The players are amazing. I’d gone to two NCAA games with the Penn Band for the men’s team in 1999 and 2000 but this is the first women’s post-season game I’ve attended. So it was really fun for me personally to get back in the “crazy fan” mode. The band sounded awesome as always! Special shout-out to Greer for fearlessly herding a plane load of college kids across the country and back.” ~ Vicky Sin, C’00

“It was wonderful to rekindle the Penn spirit and sing all the great Penn songs!” ~JodiLynne Bayrd Steiner, W’93

“In spite of the loss, Saturday was so fun! I got more fired up as the game went on! No matter where we are, as long as there are at least two Quaker fans in the seats, it feels like a million!”

~Jordan Rockwell, C’00

Party at Penn! (63 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93

It’s already April, and we’re still behind in our weekly posts. Maybe that’s because we’ve been partying too much. When we were on campus, paper invites were the way that you were invited or gained admittance to fraternity or off-campus parties.

I found several party invitations from freshman year in my scrapbook. There’s a mix of frats and off-campus. I love how the off-campus house party notes that they’re near Lee’s Hoagie House – remember them?

Do you have invitations from parties at Penn? Or were you in a frat or an off-campus house that hosted parties?

A Plethora of Performing Arts at Penn (68 Weeks To Go)

By Kiera Reilly, C’93, and  Steve Jung, C’93

The weekend of January 20-21st marked 68 weeks until our 25th reunion in our #93tothe25th countdown. This week we thank Steve Jung, C’93, for sharing memories of performing arts at Penn (Steve also shared his memories of the Palestra in this post).

Steve saved many of the programs from performing arts shows he saw while a student. Steve writes:

Here are a couple photos of artistic performances. The first one, with, “Into the Woods,” is of programs from shows I worked on as set and running crew. The second is from show I saw. Most of those were because I knew someone in the show.

I was the assistant technical director for, “Rhinoceros.” Our stage was a rotating platform on the floor of the black-box theater. The main thing I remember was rotating the stage in the dark with the rest of the crew. We stood up to signal we had locked down our section. The first time we did it, the audience applauded, probably thinking it was part of the show.
I was tech director for, “Lear.” We were in the Houston Hall Auditorium. Our design put the seating section in front of the stage and our stage in main part of the room. During construction, I made the observation that the half-completed stage looked like the Millennium Falcon.

Steve saw a lot of shows! I remember seeing many of these performances too. It was always a treat to see a live show on campus and applaud the artistic talent of fellow Penn students.
Steve’s programs include performances from Penn Players, the Curtis Organ Restoration Society, Intuitons, Theatre Arts, Arts House Dance, Quadramics, Penn Jazz Ensemble, Without a Net, Penn 6-5000, Pennchants, Penn Pipers, Arts House Theater, Penn Singers, University Wind Ensemble, and Penn Gospel Choir. (Interesting note – in searching for these groups on the web, almost all of them still exist at Penn. The Curtis Organ Society seems to have ceased to exist in 1997 – 1998 when funds were donated to restore the orgran. Arts House Theater I didn’t find save for a YouTube clip of a 1992 production, and Penn Gospel Choir is now New Spirit of Penn Gospel Choir).
Do you remember attending performing arts shows on campus? Were you in a performing arts group? We would love to hear your memories!
