Photos, Videos and Songs of Penn 1993

By Kiera Reilly, C’93, and Heidi Howard Tandy, C’92

Five years ago at our 20th reunion party, we showed this video in McClelland Hall. Heidi Howard Tandy, C’92, made the video using photos from our class, some video clips (yes we had video back in 1993), and songs that were popular when we were students.

Take fifteen minutes, watch the video, see if it brings you back to a happy time 25 years ago at Penn, and then click on this link and register to join us at our 25th Reunion!

Remembering Tough Seasons with Penn Football

By Frank Caccuro, C’93
1992 Penn Football team photo

The 1992 Penn Football team photo (pictured in Poor Richard’s Record).

Prior to coming to University of Pennsylvania, Penn Football won the Ivy League Championship seven of the previous eight years.  After our class committed to Penn, Head Coach Ed Zubrow resigned from Penn to take a job fighting drug abuse with the Philadelphia school district.  We entered our Freshman year with a new coach, Gary Steele who was an assistant under Coach Zubrow.  We still had great expectations that we would continue the Ivy League dominance and have several Ivy Championships by the time we graduated.

Unlike other Division 1 schools, Penn had a Freshman Football program which did not start until the first week of school and was an abbreviated football schedule.  While our freshman team had a good year with a 6-2 record, our varsity team did not do as well, finishing 2-8.  In our sophomore and junior years, we didn’t do any better, finishing 3-7 and 2-8.   At the end of our junior season, the Athletic Department decided a change in Coaching staff was necessary and hired Coach Al Bagnoli.   Coach Bagnoli brought a ray of hope to our senior season.  We started our senior season with a record of 4-2 with only one loss in the Ivy League entering the Penn-Princeton game.  With a win against Princeton, we would be tied for first place and in the driver’s seat to get our first Ivy League Championship.    We travelled up to Princeton’s Palmer stadium on a sunny fall day to reclaim the Ivy League Championship for Penn.  We trailed the entire game but entered the 4th quarter down by 6.   We had two great drives in the 4th quarter to take the lead.   On the first drive, we drove all way down to the five-yard line but missed a field goal to cut the lead to 3.
We still had plenty of time. After stopping Princeton on a three-and-out, we got the ball back with 2:10 remaining and led a dramatic drive to the Tigers’ 23. On the last play of the game, we got sacked by Michael Lerch, a 5-foot-7-inch, 160-pound wide receiver who occasionally plays defensive end on passing situations.  We lost 20-14.  It was the toughest loss in my career and I still recall that play vividly.  I mentioned the WR’s name because it is a name I will never forget.  We ended the season, 7-3.
While the 1993 Class did not win a Championship, we are proud that we started a 25-game win streak, a Division I-AA record.  Our younger teammates went on to win the next two Ivy League Championships, finishing 19-1!
Twenty-five years later, I still think about the Princeton loss and what could have been if Coach Bagnoli was hired our freshman year. While I would like to exchange wins with other teams, I would not exchange any of my teammates.  Whenever I see a fellow teammate, it brings a smile to my face.
Hope to see you soon.  Do better than your best!
Penn Football Coach Lake #93tothe25th

Coach Lake

Coach “Lake” Staffieri played college football at the University of Maryland and was a member of the Terps’ 1953 national championship team, playing in four bowl games: Orange Bowls (two), Gator and Sugar. Dan joined the University of Pennsylvania’s staff in 1977 as head freshman coach under Head Coach Harry Gamble. For the next 34-years, he was an assistant football coach and all-around supporter of Penn. Dan was a very recognizable figure on campus.  He was usually dressed in red and blue plaid pants, a red blazer, and a jeff cap. During football season, he could be seen and heard on Fridays before home games driving the Penn helmet cart around campus and using his megaphone to raise school spirit. During game day, he would have a piece of tape on his forehead with different messages.

Dan had numerous phrases that we would chant like

“Do better than your best!”
“Setbacks pave the way for comebacks”
and
“I! V! Y! CHAMPS!!”
Coach Lake passed away in 2010 at the age of 85 from cancer of the bladder.

Caught up in March Madness in 1993

By Zach Conen, C’93, David Foster, Eng’93, Mitchell Kraus, C’93, Kiera Reilly, C’93, and Lisa (Bardfeld) Shapiro, C’93

One of the highlights of our Spring semester senior year was the incredible run the Penn Men’s Basketball team had in Ivy League play, winning the league and defeating Princeton twice (read about the Penn vs. Princeton game on January 30, 1993 at the Palestra in our post here)! As Ivy League Champions, Penn secured an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, aka The Big Dance, and were seeded 14 in the Eastern Region and slated to play 3 seed UMass at the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University (read pre-game articles in The Daily Pennsylvanian from March 19, 1993).

We asked classmates to share their memories of traveling to Syracuse for the game (which sadly Penn lost 54 – 50).

Penn headed to the NCAA tournament! Good thing, as I need a new T-shirt. This one from 1993 is wearing a little thin (yes, they have been since, but I didn’t need a new shirt then).

Still grateful that Claude (the director of the band at the time) excused me from the wind ensemble concert to go to the game.

Great memories of the ‘93 NCAA tournament in Syracuse- from the bus ride up with the band, to being welcomed to the hotel decked out in Red and Blue, to seeing my dad (Bennett Bardfeld W’55, L’58) and all the alumni gathered to cheer on an awesome team.  It was an honor to lead the band at that game, even though the refs were totally paid by UMass!

The Big Dance: More than Just a simple game

SYRACUSE, N.Y.

For many years now I have expounded on the merits of “being there” for the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. The four tournaments I had attended before this year’s yielded the requisite quota of crazed fans, upsets and fantastic finishes, all packed into the standard two-day basketball orgy.

This past weekend, however, was different for the first time, I was making the ultimate hoops pilgrimage with a team I could truly call my own. And for 36 hours, I truly discovered the meaning of March Madness .. .

Thursday, 10:50 p.m. The odyssey commences when Pug, Sid, Steve and I pile into a 1978 Limited Edition Buick Le Sabre named Phillip, easily identifiable by its name spray-painted on the trunk. Phillip is a charming testament to American automotive engineering gone awry, and the cardboard/ Hefty Bag left rear window makes it sound as if you are driving inside of a blender at speeds above 35 miles per hour. The turn signal lever falls off three times during the ride we decide to leave it off.

Friday, 4:07 a.m. We arrive safely but manage to get lost on the streets of the deserted Syracuse campus. We are saved by Grandpa Walton’s evil twin, who is inexplicably out jogging at 3 a.m. in sub-zero temperatures, snot icicles and all. He directs us to the Alpha Chi Rho house, our destination for the evening. 10:23 a.m. After Egg McMuffins and hash browns, we decide to really kick off the day right with Bloody Marys. The only bar open at this hour is the Orange Cafe, where the bartender whips us up some positively delicious bloodies (secret ingredient Grey Poupon). Three of these hearty concoctions and a rousing episode of “The Price is Right” later, our foursome wends its way to the Carrier Dome. On our way out, the bartender reminds us that Happy Hour, featuring one dollar pitchers, begins at 4 o’clock. 12:26 p.m. It is five minutes before tipoff of the Penn game, and I have already lost my voice, my mind and made mortal enemies of the Syracuse local yokels surrounding us in Section 212. Pug advises me to save my voice by screaming from the diaphragm it doesn’t help. I valiantly attempt to ignore the moron sitting behind me, but finally vow to hunt him down after the game when he explains to his wife/ sister (said in best Dave Letterman durab-guy voice): “Duh, I don’t really like UMass, it’s just that Pennsylvania is always so cocky about their football team. Those Nittany Lions are so good every year.” I turn around and give him my best withering glare, but he just thinks I’m staring at the mold on his teeth. 2:37 p.m. The concrete and aluminum Carrier Dome may not be aesthetically pleasing, but the astroturf area in the half of the dome not used for basketball games makes a great place to eat, nap or writhe on the ground lamenting your team’s unjust downfall. (I choose the latter.) As the reality of the heartbreaking loss sinks in, I lapse into zombie state for the Manhattan vs. Virginia game not even the company of my fellow devastated Quakers in Section 307 could ease my pain. I snap out of my trance in time to wonder aloud just exactly what the hell is a Jasper? 7:41 p.m. After scarfing down wings, pizza and more green beer in record time, we hustle back to the Carrier Dome for the evening session. Situated in Section 313, we watch New Mexico State guard Sam Crawford dish out a Carrier Dome tournament record 16 assists against Nebraska. As it becomes apparent that the Aggies are going to advance, the genius seated behind us observes (said in second-best Dave Letterman dumb guy voice): “Hey, New Mexico State wears the same colors as Cincinnati. They may have to play each other in the next round. You know (big pause, thoughtful expression), one of them is going to have to wear white.” I immediately turn around to check for mold on his teeth. 9:33 p.m. Resting precariously in the delicate region between drunk and hung over, we decide to take a short nap on the astroturf between games. I wake up in time to get my picture taken with the New Mexico State cheerleaders. I am convinced that a couple of them are attracted to my newly-raspy voice, but I realize that I’m mistaken when they sprint to the refreshment stand while I’m still blinded by the flash bulb. Feeling refreshed, we settle into our new seats in Section 123 for the Cincinnati vs. Coppin State matchup. 10:45 p.m. At halftime, I fall deeply in love with the Cincinnati dance team, the Dancing Bearcats. These sequined beauties shimmy their way into the spot in my heart formerly reserved for the Penn cheerleaders’ version of “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” 11:37 p.m. As the game degenerates into a blowout, we trek back to the Crow house to jump start our weary bodies with some cocktails. With our blood pumping once again, we head out to Maggie’s, a popular Syracuse student bar. The Dancing Bearcats are nowhere to be found, so I resign myself to sitting in a booth and drinking more green beer. (At Syracuse, St. Patrick’s Day apparently doesn’t end until the green beer stops flowing.)

Saturday, 2:23 a.m. During the walk back to the “Crow’s Nest,” as we took to calling our new home, I amuse myself by peeing on a snowbank the size of College Hall. We all fall asleep to the soothing sounds of the MTV Daytona Beach Spring Break concert. I dream of Dancing Bearcats … 11:51 a.m. We wake up, and in a hail of Advil and throat lozenges, we climb into Phillip and take our final leave of the “Crow’s Nest.” I notice that Steve has some mold on his teeth. Ah, March Madness. I don’t think I could have lasted another game.

I don’t remember where we stayed, but I vaguely remember visiting local bars before and after the game. I remember being seated way up in the nosebleed seats – but that’s what the NCAA gives each participating school in their ticket allotment.

1993 Fondly Remembers OSL’s Albert Moore

By Stephen Golden, ENG’93

As I look back 25 years ago to our graduation and look forward to our upcoming reunion, I think most of the Penn students/alumni I was friends with and spent a lot of time with – either at Penn or after.  I also remember locations (dorm rooms, computer labs) and events (Spring Fling, throwing toast at football games).  I can recall some professors and classrooms (but admittedly, only a few).  But there’s another group of people I like to remember – the many people who worked at Penn in other capacities.

I was recently reminded that as we were leaving Penn, so was one of the staff members I worked closely with, Albert Moore, SW’86.  Amongst other things, Albert was a fantastic adviser to the Student Activities Council (SAC).  At the time I was running University Television (UTV), the student television station – and I can remember checking out some equipment and interviewing people (including many from the class of ‘93) who worked with Albert to create this video.  Happy memories!

And now, 25 years later, I’ve posted that video on YouTube (where I work today).  If you have any happy memories on video, post them on YouTube with the hashtag #93tothe25th.

Kiera Reilly shared these photos of Albert’s farewell party. Many of us are still in touch with Albert all these years later. We were lucky to have him as a student advisor when we were at Penn.

See You in Church!

Almost everyone who ventured west past 40th Street during our time at Penn surely remembers the phrase, “See You in Church!” uttered by Joe Murphy, aka Murph, of Murphy’s Tavern fame as you exited the bar late on Saturday night (or early Sunday morning). Situated at the northeast corner of 44th and Spruce, Murphy’s Tavern was a favorite local and campus bar. We asked classmates to share their memories.

By Josh Frank, C’93, and Julie Berliner Bell, C’93

From Julie, remembering Murph:
He was always happy to see us….gave a great deal on pitchers and what was that red drink we got there? I don’t remember what it was called.
Editor: The Skylab?
Julie: Yes! The Skylab! The bar was gross, but Murph was always happy to have us (even those of us with bad fake IDs).

Murph and Murphy's Tavern Hey Day 1993

Julie Berliner Bell poses with Murph outside of Murphy’s Tavern on Hey Day, April 1993.

From Josh:
What can I say about Murph and Murphy’s Tavern? It was the quintessential bar, and one my friends and I preferred over any other establishment around campus. It had everything we wanted from a bar, and nothing we disliked. Memories are hazy at this point, but I distinctly remember that there was always great music. It wasn’t small, but it wasn’t so big that you felt like you couldn’t see and interact with everyone there on any given night. It had the perfect balance of intimacy and yet wasn’t too claustrophobic. It had zero pretension, but wasn’t a dump — it had the perfect vibe, and I would have been thrilled to find a bar exactly like Murph’s at any point in my 20s to hang out in. Murph’s had an iconic and unique drink, the Skylab, that was the perfect drink for college students because it was not too expensive, it was full of alcohol, it tasted great, it had a great name, and was indigenous to Murph’s and only Murph’s.
Over everything, though, Murph’s had Murph, who was the quintessential Irish bar owner. Friendly, gregarious, always welcoming of his regulars, but happy to have newcomers. Anyone coming into his bar immediately felt at home. Murph had a great schtick, mostly because it wasn’t schtick for him, it was completely and totally authentic.
Josh sent this photo saying, “I’m disowning my friends for not including me in this picture. I was with them at Murph’s that morning, so I’m not sure how I missed being in this photo, but I will never fully forgive them.”

Murph’s “See You In Church” that he said to everyone as they left his bar may have led to Jef’s eventual marriage to his wife, Deb Brown. As I recall, Deb was a columnist for the DP, and named her column “See You In Church”. Jef and I didn’t know Deb at that point, but we thought her picture was cute (as much as one could see of a one square inch black and white photo in the DP), and that she had to be super-cool to name her column after Murph’s tag line. Jef eventually pursued Deb, and the rest is history. I don’t know if Jef and Deb consider Murph responsible in any way for their relationship, but I wouldn’t be surprised to know that there are many couples who are still together who met in some small or big way because of Murph’s. What held true for Jef and me looking at Deb’s column still holds true today — anyone who “got” Murph’s was our kind of person, and that’s all anyone can ask for from their favorite college bar.
Jef Pollock
Absolutely, 10000% true. We also named our first pet guinea pig with our kids Murphy.
Editor:
Read more about Deb and Jef’s love story in our Penn Love Connections Part 2 post.
What happened to Murphy’s Tavern? After multiple Liquor Control Board violations, Murphy’s was forced to close after a judge refused to renew their liquor license in January, 1997 (as detailed in this DP article). Now the location is the site of Local 44, a “neighborhood beer joint.”

Philadelphia – The Living Breathing Heart of a Penn Education

By Brian C. Newberry, C’93

Throughout high school Cornell and its architecture program had beckoned.  My Penn acceptance letter arrived one day before its Cornell twin and during the intervening uncertain 24 hours I recall sitting on the stairs at home mulling over my future, eventually deciding to choose Penn for one reason only – Philadelphia and the chance to live in the heart of the city.  Might my decision been different had the letters come in reverse order?  Perhaps, but rarely have I made a decision so correct in retrospect.

While a certain percentage of the American population and of our classmates grew up in the heart of a city, be it Philadelphia, New York etc. most Americans come of age elsewhere.  Even if they live in an urban area they may be on the periphery and as children are often shielded from all that a major city has to offer, good and bad, secluded in their own neighborhoods with a trip to Center City not being much different than for a kid from the suburbs.  My education at Penn, with 25 years reflection, had far less to do with the classes I took or the professors I had, excellent though most of them were, but with all that having the time to explore Philadelphia taught about life.

Living on or near campus is one thing but, helped immensely by my time as a photographer for the DP which gave me the excuse – plus minor reimbursable expenses –  to explore every nook and cranny, I spent my four years doing just that.  Yes I recall great lecturers – Bruce Kuklick, Herman Beavers, Jack Reece and many more but my most vivid memories are far less academic.

On a frivolous yet fun note, the sports opportunities alone were fascinating.  Among many, a few stand-out with time.  I got to interview the Phillie Phanatic and cover a game from the field. That same summer I also had photographic duty during a “friendly” between Sheffield Wednesday of the EPL and the US Men’s National Soccer team at the Vet.  Earlier that spring I was courtside with camera to watch my hometown UConn Women’s basketball team cut down the nets at the Palestra on their way to their first Final Four, little knowing what a run for the ages they would soon embark upon.

There were the opportunities to get up close and personal with big-time politics.  Forget Bill Clinton’s visit in 1992 to deliver his economic address.  That was a big deal but was more because of Wharton than the city itself.  During the 1991 special Senate election following the death of Senator John Heinz in a plane crash, however, I was able to both meet eventual winner Harris Wofford in the DP offices while also covering a fundraiser for his opponent Dick Thornburgh hosted by President Bush at the Bellevue.  Likewise, that same summer Wilson Goode was term limited and the Mayor’s race took center stage with all its opportunities to see urban retail politics up close.  I will never forget photographing a candidate/comedy charity benefit at the Bank Street Comedy Club at which all three Mayoral candidates took the stage – including Penn’s own Ed Rendell – and then mingled with the small crowd afterward.  Frank Rizzo died a week later and we won a press award for our coverage based in part on the photo I got that night, which the Daily News photo editor had the kindness to call me personally and tell me was the best cover in the city.

I drove an ESCORT van for two years, right up until I began law school at Temple in the fall of 1993, and learned every street and alley between 18th and 49th, Lancaster, Powelton, Baltimore, JFK Blvd. and South Streets.  There are few things more peaceful then driving the usually crowded and noisy city streets, windows down, on a spring or summer night at 2AMwhen no one but the cabbies, the garbage and delivery trucks are out; a whole side of the city most never see.  The liquid nitrogen delivery was always made to the medical school circa 1:30 AM every night.  I kept waiting for the Terminator to appear each time I saw it.  On the flip side there were all those 5PM first shift drives to the various repair shops to pick up the vans – there were always vans under repair – before service started.  One shop was out in West Philly but the other was in North Philly near Girard. Like auto repair shops everywhere they were in less than safe areas and the barbed wire and guard dogs were real.

Just walking the city was educational.  There was so much to soak in and I took every opportunity to do so.  Neighborhood after neighborhood from the historic district and Independence Park, to the purely residential areas a few blocks from the skyscrapers, to the museum district to South Philly to Northern Liberties to the riverfronts, both Delaware and Schuylkill.  On our first real date my wife and I began the day at the Rodin Museum, spent more time at the Art Museum, headed downtown to Independence Hall, took the tour, had lunch at City Tavern, made our way through the Italian Market and to Geno’s Steaks* before heading back to Center City to go to a movie at the Ritz – all on foot. One summer I took my camera and rode every inch of the city’s subway system from Fern Rock to Pattison, Bridge-Pratt to 69th Street just to see it all.  If there was a festival at Penn’s Landing or anywhere that sounded fun I would grab the camera and go.

Summer was a particularly fruitful time for exploration.  Fourth of July 1992 was especially memorable – a group of us spent the afternoon having a cook-out on my porch at 4034 Spruce, enjoying (a few too many) adult beverages (I have never touched Southern Comfort since that day), then headed downtown on the pot-soaked (is that a word or merely a mixed metaphor?) El from 40th and Market to go watch the fireworks near the Ben Franklin Bridge.  The crowd estimate was a million strong just packed into the riverfront area.  When it was all over the subways were so jammed that we didn’t want to wait so we walked 44 blocks back to Murph’s to close the day, one of the women going barefoot due to blisters.  One July day the year prior I woke up to WMMR on the radio saying that Alice Cooper was doing an impromptu free concert down near Independence Hall.  Not a huge Alice Cooper fan but so what, right?  Headed on down and it was a blast.  Speaking of music I also got to occasionally cover concerts at the Spectrum from the press box and do reviews.  Being on the DP staff did have its perks.

There was the dark side of the City.  We all remember the homelessness, the drug dealing and the crime.  One night while driving ESCORT I remember shots fired and it turned out a guy was hit in a drive-by on Walnut near 40th.  He turned down 40th, must have seen the cops at Uni-Mart, where they often hung out, backed his car up onto Walnut, drove half a block and then died, with his car crashing into a tree.  But it went beyond campus.  I explored an abandoned crack den in North Philadelphia while photographing a Habitat for Humanity project next door.  Often, during my wanderings I would find myself entering areas where I probably shouldn’t have been for my own safety, though no one ever bothered me.  Philadelphia is not unique in this respect but the capacity for the city to shift from block to block never ceased to amaze.  To this day I have an unconscious street sense no matter where I am, always alert to my surroundings, “thanks” to the city.  My wife was a student at Textile and one time I borrowed my roommate’s car to go see her.  Coming back it was rush hour and so I, naively, took the most direct route down Ridge Avenue.  It’s amazing the hub caps survived the trip.  From that day forward I always took the train from 30th Street.  There were some interesting characters on that commuter rail platform on 30th Street late at night and, hey, who appropriated these old train signs and left them in my basement?

And of course there were the con artists and assorted less than savory characters that appeared from time to time.  There was the guy who showed up in my backyard at 39th and Walnut one spring Saturday morning and told us that he was trying to take the train from DC to NY but had gotten off in Philly because he had run out of money and wanted our help so he could get back on. I refrained from asking what he was doing 11 blocks from 30th Street Station if he was so hell bent on a train and just politely sent him on his way not wanting to find out if he had a gun.  There was also the notorious con artist – name escapes me but he was reported by numerous students over the years – who I swear I ran into one night around midnight at the 24 hour post office on Market Street.  This guy was good.  He noticed every little thing about what I was wearing and tried to build a connection around it down to a Hartford Whaler reference as he tried to work me out of some cash.  Smooth.  Ithaca may have its riff-raff but doubtful it is on this scale.

So is Penn a fantastic university and all around educational institution with cutting edge teaching and research? Absolutely.  But so are many other universities.  Few of them, however, can match the experience of seeing life in all its fullness, lightness and darkness, as living four years, and in my case eventually seven, in the heart of one of the great walking cities of the world.  That is my most enduring memory of college.  I love Philadelphia, always have and always will.  After seven years my wife and I left to return to our native New England where our families were and I have never regretted that decision but if I ever win Powerball I intend to buy a Phillies luxury box and one of those Ritz-Carlton condos across from City Hall so I can visit whenever I like – just so long as Eagles fans learn that it is stupid to stand on the awnings to celebrate a Super Bowl win and take their mayhem elsewhere.

*With time I have concluded that Pat’s is better than Geno’s, but both pale in comparison to Dalessandro’s in Roxborough at the corner of Henry Avenue and Walnut Lane.  I still have an old helmet shaped refrigerator magnet from our 10th reunion from Dalessandro’s showing the Eagles 2003 schedule.  It is on the small fridge in our garage that we store extra items in and that I bought from a friend back in 1991.  It has outlasted three other larger ones.

Smokes – the Pennstitution

By Mark Sullivan, C’93

Here are some of my memories of Smokes.

Smokey Joe's Smokes at Penn

Raid by the Liquor Control Board (LCB)

During the first semester of our freshman year, it was still possible to get into Smokes with a Penn student ID and other questionable forms of identification. The Pennsylvania liquor control board began to crack down, and so we had to be tougher with ID’s. I began bouncing at the end of my freshman year. Members of the wrestling team/ATO had proven to be adept at handling the imposing Penn student population. As you may recall, the uniform for all Smokey Joe’s employees – bartenders, wait staff and bouncers – was a long sleeve oxford with a tie that was tucked in. Many a night, someone would show up without a tie, so there were extra ties (many of them very ugly) that were kept behind the upstairs and downstairs bars. One night during our sophomore or junior year, the LCB raided Smokey Joe’s. They blocked the front and back doors, made everyone exit one by one and checked their ID’s. Some enterprising (and underage) patrons put on some of the extra ties that were behind the bar and tried to pass themselves off as employees. Unfortunately, they wore the ties over polo shirts, baggy sweaters or sweatshirts, and the LCB was not convinced.

Erin Express

The Erin Express is a pub crawl held around St. Patrick’s day throughout University City and Center City. School buses drive a loop to each bar that participates in the Erin Express. One year, one of the buses pulled up to Smokey Joe’s and the bus driver went in to use the restroom. One of the passengers grew impatient and drove the bus to the next bar.

21st Birthday Celebrations

I learned the real names of several of our classmates on their 21st birthdays. Most of the birthday celebrations were benign, but a few got out of hand, including one male celebrant who ended up riding a bicycle naked in the downstairs bar at the end of the night.

Nearby Shooting

By our junior year, Smoke‘s had installed the video camera and microphone to prove that each person admitted had been carded and stated their name and date of birth. Very late in the Spring of that year, I was working the door with another bouncer (who shall remain nameless). It was a very warm evening and the windows and front door were open. Smoke‘s was pretty empty – it may have even been the week of final exams. Just as the other bouncer and I were carding two women who walked in together, gun shoots rang out on the corner of 40th and Walnut just outside of McDonald’s. The other bouncer and I could see some flashes of light and the car with the shooter speed away. I remember the strong smell of gunpowder lingering in the humid air. The other bouncer and I excitedly recounted the events to everyone inside Smoke‘s. We explained how brave we had been and how we had sprung into action and protected the two women who we were checking for ID by removing them from harm’s way. The only problem was that the video recorder had been running and when they played back the tape, it showed the other bouncer and I cowering behind the two women patrons when we heard the gunshots and using them as human shields. Management played that tape every night for the following week to everyone else’s amusement.

Trying to Remember Feb Club

By the 1993 Senior Class Board

Five years ago as we prepared to celebrate our 20th Reunion, we wrote a post about Feb Club, a now annual senior year tradition started by our Senior Class Board (you can read that post here: Celebrating Feb Club – 20 Years Later with Penn 1993).

Now we wondered, how did Feb Club begin? We asked the Senior Class Board for more insight, and they responded in an email chain…

Brooke Hays, W’93, WG’99

I actually came up with the idea for Feb Club because I felt bad for the Deke guys who couldnt get anyone to go out with them.  So we convinced seniors to go out every night. The T-shirts helped the Deke guys fit in at the parties.

Laurie Bieber, C’93, GEd’94

Funny man you are, Brooke Hayes!

I honestly don’t remember the details.  Anyone?

Lisa (Luther) Housel, NU’93

Ha! Brooke!! Good to see you haven’t lost your sense of humor after all these years!

I don’t really remember any of the details either- glad to see I’m not the only one 🙂

Only thing I remember is trying to coordinate our schedules so at least one of us was able attend every event that month to manage things. Turned into quite a busy social schedule for all of us. Also have no idea how we ever got anything done before email and cell phones to help with communication. Lots of in-person meetings I guess! Fun times with a great team!

Elissa Laitin, ENG’93

I totally remember that the idea was a spin-off of DKE’s Feb Club. We didn’t go out every night – it was like 11-12 events during the month.

We also had a raffle to help incentivize people to come to all the events. I think it was a $100 cash prize and people were only eligible if they came to at least 10 of the 11 events, or something like that. So then we had to manually track everyone who came to every event….

One of the things that was great about it was that there were a bunch of non-bar events like ice skating, movie night, and a basketball game – and that brought out a lot of seniors who didn’t come to other things b/c they wanted social events that weren’t just about drinking.

Boy this is bringing up a lot of memories! And now I’m getting Senior Week flashbacks.  Just don’t ask me what I did last weekend – that, I don’t remember….

Chrissy Bass Hofbeck, C’93

I just went in the attic to dig out my old Penn planner in hopes of finding the Feb Club schedule. Unfortunately the only thing tucked into my planner was a photo from Spring Break in Jamaica.

That said, I remember there were 3 events per week for a total of 12. I think you needed to go to 10 of the 12 to get a t-shirt. And yes, we had equal numbers (or so) of bar versus non-bar events. So we are all having the same recollection of events. I remember having our Board meetings in Brooke’s room at Sigma Chi.

Those were good times. Hope to see you all at the reunion in May. Hard to believe it’s been 25 years.

Jenn Spadano-Gasbarro, C’93

I am so impressed with all you guys remember. I can remember neither what I did this past weekend nor the details of Feb club except that it was an idea borrowed from Deke. I do, however, have pictures…

Allison Feder Fliegler, W’93, L’99, and Brett Fliegler, W’93

The first day of senior year, I started walking home from my class at the Colonial Penn Center on Locust Walk, and I noticed Brett Fliegler walking out of the same building. I said something about about not seeing him in a while. As it turned out, he and I hadn’t been on campus together in over a year, since we were each abroad opposite semesters of junior year. Our off campus houses were on the same block (shout out to all my 4038 ladies!), so we walked home together throughout the semester and became fast friends, though we didn’t date at Penn.
After graduation, we both headed to NYC. That fall, Stacey Graff Kaufman, C’93, and I were on our way to meet Suzy Shlensky Aronoff, C’93, Jen Eisenberg Bernstein, C’93, and others (who else?) for Gabi Gould Solash’s, C’93, birthday dinner at Tony Di Napoli’s, when we ran into Brett and Todd Aronoff, C’93, on the street. Brett mentioned that a mutual friend of ours had just given him my number the day before, so of course I asked him why I hadn’t heard from him yet. He called the following Wednesday (still not sure what the hell took so long). Our first official date was a week later—we ate at Fez and saw Blue Man Group in the east Village, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Brett and I have been together for 24 years, married for 18, and took our kids, Emme (15) and Matthew (12), to see Blue Man group on the 20th anniversary of our first date. They thought it was just ok. What do they know anyway?

Michelle (Pohusky) Wellman, Eng’93, and Parris Wellman, Eng’93

Our story began at 220 S. 33rd Street (the Towne Building) one April evening in 1991. Six years of graduate school, one wedding ceremony, five startups, ten jobs, five moves, one money pit and one little girl later, we’re still together. Grayer, older and probably not any wiser. The best adventures are yet to come…

Vyjayanti (Tharmaratnam) Desai, C’93, WG’00, and Sanjay Desai, Eng’93, W’93

Sanjay (nickname Bobby) and Vyjayanti were friends from the very beginning of freshman year. Bobby is pretty sure he met her at a party orientation week, although she doesn’t quite remember that. They were friends throughout Penn…studying together for hours (or trying to study) on the 4th floor of Van Pelt or in Steinberg Dietrich, dancing weekends away with their same group of friends at parties, supporting each other through other relationships, taking Amtrak down to their hometowns together for vacations, and practicing bhangra past midnight with their dance troupe on the High Rise rooftop.

It’s hard to put a date on their official start of their relationship…she laughs at how many Saturday evenings she ignored his inebriated declarations of affection for her because she knew that on Sunday when they met up to study or grab a meal, he would not remember. Post college, they dated long distance as well as overlapped in Boston for graduate school. They got married in 1999 and live in Bethesda, MD with their 11 year old twin boys.

Christie Shaw Whidden, W’93, and Michael Whidden, C’93

We met at the intersection of 40th and Spruce in the beginning of senior year; it will be forever debated whether the fateful spot was at Billy Bob’s or, across the street, at Allegro.  Our paths would cross a few more times in the fall while friends such as Elissa Laitin, Eng’93, Chris Gidden, W’93, Elaine Chang, C’93, and James Helfrich, Eng’94, GEN’95, served as emissaries.  Fortuitous seating in spring semester AMES 090 brought our worlds irreversibly together.
Editor: What is AMES?
Christie: Asian and Middle Eastern Studies!
We started dating in February 1993, got engaged in Japan in November 1995, got married on Long Island in 1999, settled into Brooklyn in 2000, and have since brought three little Quakers into the world: Miranda (11yo), Everett (7yo) and Atticus (5yo).

Mara Turbiner Felder, C’93, and Alan Felder, W’93

Alan and I met freshman year in a Chemistry lecture hall.  We were both pre-med at the time, and I thought he was really cute so I mustered the courage to sit next to him one day. He soon realized that pre-med was not for him (something about a D in Chem lab) and transferred to Wharton.  We would never have another class together but kept seeing one another around campus.  By junior year we were dating seriously, even staying together while Alan was abroad in Heidelberg. I sent him lots of care packages, and he wrote me lots of letters (snail mail on that thin, blue, international postage paper).
After graduation we remained together even though we were in different cities for several years. We finally came together in 1996 to live in South Africa for a year and get married. It’s been 21 years, and I still tease him about almost failing Chemistry! We now have two daughters (Samantha, 17 and Emily, 15) and a ton of good memories of Penn and all the years that followed.

Meredith Grabois Josef, C’93, and Brian Josef, C’93

Brian and I are both ‘93 grads. We met freshman year at the Quad, but didn’t start dating until sophomore year, when a chance meeting near High Rise North led to our first date—Bocce pizza & TCBY. We got engaged at the High Rises six years later and will celebrate our 20th anniversary later this month! Some of our favorite memories of Penn include late nights at Murph’s and Abner’s with friends, road tripping to see Penn basketball play in the NCAAs in Syracuse without heat in the car, and traveling together during our study abroad semester in Europe. We now live in the Washington, DC area and have two children ages 13 and 10.

Dorothea Schlosser, W’93, and Tom Kopczynski, W’93

Tom and I met in the first day of school as freshman in Community House in the Quad, and started dating sophomore year once he was single! I can still hear him crunching on Snyder’s Hard Pretzels during Accounting 101 that made me giggle. We are still very close with many of our friends from Penn- we are sitting in our kitchen laughing about pranks, parties and Merkins, some of whom also feature in Penn couples- Amy and Jeff, Steve and Elaine, and Dave and Stacey.  We married in 1996 and we are happily settled in Basking Ridge, NJ with two kids and too many animals.

Hilary (Marion) Hayes, C’93, and Brooke Hayes, W’93, WG’99

Hilary and I met in the Spring of sophomore year.  She came to eat lunch with Katie Faunce at Smokey Joe’s on my first day waiting tables.  I recall they tipped pretty well.
Hilary and I didn’t connect again until the senior week pub crawl of our junior year.  That night, she was hanging with some dude on a double date alongside John Clement, C’92, and Christy Glass, C’93, W’93.  Somehow (thanks Clem), by the time we got to campus, I had replaced the dude.
After a steamy week together, Hilary left on a trip to Israel. She had given me her phone number, but I don’t think she expected me to call her. It was her home-home phone number! Her dad was very confused of why some gentile was calling all summer while his daughter was in the Holy Land. Fast forward to our 25th reunion, and we have been married for almost 21 years and have four great kids (and the oldest of them is a sophomore at Penn)!

Margaret (Kane) Schoen, Eng’93, and Larry Schoen, C’93, W’93

We met senior year, introduced by Josh Astrof, W’93, Larry’s roommate and my co-editor at the Daily Pennsylvanian. Married September 1997 (with plenty of alums in attendance!) We have two kids, Julie 17, and Emily 14.

Liz (Rabii) Cribbs, W’93, and Derek Cribbs, W’93

Derek and I both lived in Kings Court/English House Freshman year but didn’t start getting to know each other until Sophomore/Junior year. We began dating at the very end of Senior year and have been together ever since. After grad school in Boston, we moved to NYC and got married in 1997 – and just celebrated our 20 year wedding anniversary this past September. Six of our Penn friends were in our wedding party: Rich Barrera, W’93, Tom Lee, C’93, Catherine (Donladson-Evans) Strawder, C’93, Sonia (Verma) Parekh, W’93, Julie (Avila) Stuckmann, W’93, and Jen (Yang) Weedn, W’93, and remain among our closest friends today.  We have been blessed by two wonderful children – Carter (15) and Cassidy (13).  Looking forward to seeing all of our classmates at the reunion.

Barry Mark, C’93, and Jorie Green Mark, C’96

Jorie and I met in 1995 at the candy machine inside the DP when I was visiting my middle brother Adam, C’97.  “Whoa, you look nothing like your brother,” Jorie said to me…. So I took the cue, nudged Adam aside, and spent the next few hours hanging with my future wife.

16 years of marriage and three kids later, we’re enjoying warm Florida winters and our sunny lives together. Jorie is the Senior Manager of Social Media for The Kroger Company, and I’m an Allergist in and around Fort Lauderdale.

Sejal (Tailor) Srinivasan, W’93, and Naren Srinivasan, W’94, C’94

While I am Class of ’93, I robbed the cradle and married Naren Srinivasan, Class of ’94.  Naren literally picked me up on the bridge over 38th Street on our way to a South Asian Society dance party. I tripped and couldn’t walk and so he helped carry me over!
We were close friends for a long time and only started dating after he graduated from Penn and were married just two years later. We always had a connection. The first time we met up after the bridge pick up, we shut down 1920s Commons we were talking so much. Another time, he took me out to dinner to celebrate my first job offer and we didn’t even notice that we weren’t served dinner two hours after arriving when the waiter asked if we wanted dessert!
We’ve been married almost 22 years and have two wonderful children. When we are not too exhausted from our children, we can still talk up a storm!

Carol Wilkinson, C’94, and Dan Schoenholz, C’93

Dan and I met in line at the old Penn bookstore. After finding out my name and what building I lived in at the Quad, he looked through every floor of my building until he found my room. Then he left a note under the door with his 4 digit Penn extension. Our first date was at Beijing Restaurant on Spruce Street. That was 28 years ago!

During the fall of my freshman year, my 36 year old uncle passed away unexpectedly,  and I became sick from the stress. Dan was not big on making me go to the Student Health on my own and took me to get me checked out many times. He was a keeper! We were inseparable after that. Dan sat in on my classes and we spent all of our weekends in and around Philly.

Jaclyn (Israel) Leit, C’93, and Richard Leit, C’94

Richard and I met when we were both cast in the Penn Players Fall 1990 show The Threepenny Opera.  He was a freshman, and I was a sophmore. While he can tell you exactly what I was wearing at the first read-through; I can’t tell you much, except that I was trying to figure out how to say his last name. We became friends and he did ask me out, but at that time I had started dating someone else. We started to get closer when we began spending more time together through mutual friends and because we were both psych majors. In my junior year, we were both on the Arts House Theater board and that is when things changed. He became one of my best friends.

We didn’t start dating until second semester of my senior year. We call it the Billy Bob’s conversation because we were there when we realized we should go out. We had a few break-ups and make-ups over the next few years while we were both doing our graduate studies (He was in DC getting his Ph.d and I was in Chicago earning my MSW). We actually never lived in the same state after I graduated Penn until after we were engaged. Ironically, we were also never cast in the same show together at Penn except for that one show. We married in June 1997. We began the most important roles in our lives when our children were born. We have 2 sons (13 yrs and 10 yrs) and  and a Morkie.  Both boys would love to go to Penn.

Penn 1993 Love Connections – Part 3

Since it’s Valentine’s Day this week, we asked our Penn 1993 classmates if they met their spouse at Penn. Many classmates responded with the story of how they met, if they met at Penn, and if they both graduated in 1993. We will be sharing these stories over a few posts. Here is the second installment of Penn Couples from the Class of 1993!
Stories included here:
  • Michele Stein Mendoza, C’93, GSE’95, & Dennis Mendoza, W’93

Michele Stein Mendoza, C’93, GSE’95, & Dennis Mendoza, W’93

How you met – First day of Freshman year on the 12th floor of High Rise South. Don’t remember much about our meeting, but we both clearly remember Dennis’ roommate introducing himself at the first floor meeting, “Hi, my name is Michael Jackson. I can’t sing, and I can’t dance.”

From Vyjayanti T. Desai (look for her and her husband’s story coming in Part 4):

When I was looking for pictures in my old box, I found these of Michelle Stein and Denis Mendoza from our freshman year (12th floor of High Rise South).   Michelle was one of my roommates and Denis was on our floor.

Howard Levene, Eng’93, and Tammy (Mirensky) Levene, Eng’01, M’05

My wife and I are both Penn grads…but we met after graduation!

We first met on JDate back in 2002, when I was a 1st year Neurosurgical Resident at Temple University Hospital, and she was a 1st year Medical Student at Penn.

We had our first date in Philadelphia at the Victor Cafe. We had one more date but our timing wasn’t right. We did discover that Tammy’s cousin was the Rabbi at my parents’ synagogue in Cherry Hill, and we had many shared interests. She was a Biomedical Engineer (her undergrad degree) with interest in Neurosurgery, and I was a Mechanical Engineer (my undergrad degree) who became a Biomedical Engineer (PhD) and at the time was in my Neurosurgical Residency!

We re-connected in 2015 (Thanks Facebook!) on May 30th, the day before my parents’ 50th Anniversary (Dad is Penn ’54 and ’58 and Mom is Penn Graduate school ’64).

Just about 11 months later, we were married and had loads of Penn grads there.  And yes, we did sing “Hurrah for the Red and the Blue!”

Howard Levene met his wife after Penn

Carolyn (Friedman) Frank and Josh Frank, C’93

We met in the spring semester of junior year (1992) outside of the Quaker Shaker food truck, which was outside of Stiteler Hall. I was coming out of a Psych class, and Carolyn was walking with a couple of mutual friends (Joanna Fein and Stacey Steinberg). I hadn’t ever met or seen Carolyn, and was curious who the cute girl was with Stacey and Joanna. As it turns out, she was a transfer student, which explained why I didn’t know her. We started dating a few weeks later, and never really stopped, even though we were apart for four years after graduation when Carolyn was in law school at University of Miami, and I spent a year working in Congress for Speaker Tom Foley before going to law school at Georgetown. We inadvertently set our wedding date for our five year reunion (oops!), and will be celebrating our 20th anniversary on May 16th.
I’ve attached a before and after picture — the before is from the summer of 1992, a few months after we started dating. I was working in DC as an intern for Bob Shrum, a Democratic political consultant, and Carolyn was visiting me before she flew to Israel for a summer program at Hebrew University. I picked the photo mostly because of the Penn umbrella I’m holding.
Editor: Stylist points for including a Penn umbrella that gives a nod to the red of Carolyn’s shirt.

Helen (Punwaney) Currie, C’93, and Neil Currie, C’93

My wife and I met freshman year at the Hill House front desk. We both had the same work-study job as front desk staff. We were married on June 12, 1998 and will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary this June. We live in Long Beach, CA with our 2 children, Katelyn (16) and Aidan (13).

Janet Miller Stier, C’93, and Byron Stier, C’93

Janet and Byron were “fixed up” by Penn Professor Al Filreis in the fall of 1992. Al was Byron’s English-major mentor and the director/trustee of Janet’s second home/summer camp.  Al arranged for them to meet with him in his office at the same time. Allison Fink Brody, C’93, was also instrumental in this pairing, by giving him the phone number for Janet. Professor Filreis read a poem at their wedding in 1997. Byron and Janet now reside in Los Angeles, where he is an Associate Dean and Professor of Law at Southwestern Law School, and she is a child psychologist in private practice.

Leigh-Ann Maltz-Dichter, C’93, and Eric Dichter, C’93

We officially met when we came to Penn in the summer of 1989 to discuss course selections. My mom embarrassingly introduced us and truly said, “You don’t need to marry him, but at least you’ll have another familiar face on campus!” We’ve been married since 1996! Thankful for our Penn roots and great friends!

Leigh-Ann Maltz-Dichter and Eric Dichter, then and now

Diana Tapper, C’93, and Jason Gorevic, C’93

Jason and I met one week before senior year at a party at 4012 Spruce Street.  We were introduced by Deb Brown, C’93, who promptly left to leave us talking with one another.  As it often does, the night progressed to Smoke’s and then Pat’s downtown with a group of friends, where Deb and Keith Dallara, Eng’94, W’94, obviously both not of sound mind at that point, made a bet over a cheesesteak that Jason and I were going to get married someday.  Nine years later, Keith presented Deb with her cheesesteak right in the middle of our wedding ceremony. Verdict was – not as good as Pat’s. Seems like we need another payoff from Pat’s during reunion weekend!

Lisa Nass Grabelle, C’93, L’96, and Dean Grabelle, L’95

In 1993, Dean and I were both Penn law students … he was a 2L, I was a 1L … when I first spotted him. I didn’t know anything about Dean except that he was a cute red head who was kinda quiet yet very social. As my kids would say, I “low-key” stalked him – usually at law school hot spots like the Irish Pub, Roosevelt’s, Smoke’s, Cavanaugh’s and other high class “Pick-Of-The-Week” drinking holes (Hilary Marion Hayes, C’93, was with me some nights to witness this and acted as my wing lady).

Looking back it would have been so much easier for me if I had an iPhone and social media to figure out which bar he was going to on which night! Guess my stalking worked….Dean asked me out right as summer started at the end of my first year in May of 1994. After our first few dates over one marathon weekend, I drove to the shore in my sporty Chrysler Laser with sunblocked tinted windows (of course, I’m from Miami Beach!) and shared my excitement with some of my 4049 Locust girls – Monica Muzzi Moore, Angela Sabatino Collingwood and Bonnie Todd Marino.

The rest is history! Dean and I married in 1999, live in South Jersey with our two teenage girls, and visit Penn literally ALL the time (while Dean attended college at Duke, he now feels like an honorary Class of ’93 member since I bring him to everything).

Allyson Wagner Sonenshine, C’93, and Coby Sonenshine, C’92, W’92

Coby and I met at Skolnick’s in Houston Hall sometime in December 1989. He had seen me perform at my first Off the Beat show at the Gold Standard underneath The Palladium. When we were introduced shortly thereafter (by his unwitting ex-girlfriend, no less), Coby stood up, looked me in the eye, shook my hand, and said “nice to meet you” … this simple courtesy made such a great impression that I knew I wanted to get to know him better. (His mother loves that part of the story.)

Anyway, we ran into each other a few days later, outside of College Hall, and ended up talking for longer than we should have given the snow falling around us. We started dating in January 1990 and have been together ever since.

We moved to Los Angeles after graduation to go to law school at USC and eventually ended up in Newport Beach, California, where we are raising two boys, Solomon (17) and Max (15).
