First September with the Penn Club of Northern California

By Beth Topor, W’80, and Jenny Zhan, C’10, W’10

NorCal First Sept_0865

The Penn Club of Northern California welcomed the Class of 2013 to the Bay area with what else – a wine tasting! This First September celebration was held on Saturday, September 7, at DogPatch Wine Works, the newest winery to open in San Francisco. The crowd of just under 100 wine tasters included undergraduate and graduate school alumni with more than half of the attendees from the Class of 2013! We enjoyed seeing classmates reunite, not knowing each had been fortunate to land in San Francisco. It was great occasion for Quakers to mingle, nosh and sample wines; white and red, but alas no blue.

Tom Eliaz, ENG’02, president of the Penn Club, welcomed the new alumni to the area with a toast, and encouraged all to get involved with local Penn activities which include interviewing high school students and volunteering with the Club. Tom introduced the Club Board members and Interviewing Chairs who were enjoying the tasting but also ready to answer questions about how all alumni can become West Coast Ambassadors for Penn.

Tom concluded by inviting all Northern California alumni to “Time to Shine” on Thursday October 10th, hosted by Penn President Amy Gutmann. This reception will be followed by a YPenn happy hour for our young alumni classes 2004 – 2013. Over 400 alumni registered to attend.

Penn Cares with the Penn Club of Northern California – Habitat for Humanity

By Betty Huang, ENG’12, GEN’12, and Jenny Zhan, C’10, W’10

Donning hard hats at 8:30AM on a chilly and grey Saturday morning, volunteers from the Penn Club of Northern California joined in on ground-breaking work with Habitat for Humanity of Greater San Francisco. The work was more physically challenging than usual because we were doing foundation work, that is, a lot of shoveling, waterproofing, wheelbarrowing, and moving dirt around. Despite the difficulties, it was very gratifying getting in on a project from the very beginning: Habitat had just received permits for a 28-unit single family development named Habitat Terrace, an ambitious project in the Oceanview neighborhood and the organization’s largest development yet in San Francisco.

We are proud to contribute to Habitat’s mission to provide a helping hand to families in need of improved living conditions. The homes that we helped lay the foundations for will be sold to families at no profit and financed with 0% interest mortgages. In addition, new owners will put 500 hours of work into their own homes. It will take over 100,000 volunteer hours to finish this Habitat Terrace development in the next 2 years, and the Penn Club of Northern California is looking forward to seeing the project through. Thank you to all our volunteers on August 17th, and if you live in the area, please join us in serving our community!

Penn Cares with the Penn Club of Northern California

By Betty Huang, ENG’12, GEN’12, and Jenny Zhan, C’10, W’10

On Saturday, June 15th, we held our inaugural Penn Club of Northern California community service event with eight Penn alumni at the San Francisco Food Bank warehouse in the Potrero Hill neighborhood. The San Francisco Food Bank delivers 100,000 meals worth of food every day to senior and families in need, and relies on volunteers year-round to help package and distribute the resources. Our Penn Cares volunteers spent three hours that Saturday afternoon manning the apple juice table – that is, we were responsible for filling each food donation box with two bottles of apple juice. Packed additionally with cereal, canned fruit, and other pantry staples, these boxes would go out to the 11,000 low-income seniors in San Francisco, where approximately one in four seniors live at the risk of hunger.

NorCal Penn Cares 1

We were blown away by the efficiency of the Food Bank staff in directing all the volunteers, for many of whom this was a first-time experience at the warehouse. We all gathered around an assembly line in an orderly fashion, and worked at such a rapid pace that we had to constantly switch positions because our arms would get sore (lifting bottles of apple juices was quite a workout)! Nevertheless, everybody had a great time, and our three-hour shift passed by quickly as we all chatted away while multi-tasking on the packaging. Volunteers like us work in shifts to provide the Food Bank with the equivalent manpower of 70 full-time workers – this in turn allows the Food Bank to save on salaries and turn 96% of all donations directly to their programs. At the end of our shift, we were asked to guess how many food boxes we had packaged – we were all astonished to hear that together with the other volunteers, we had packed exactly 1,377 boxes in three hours, helping 1,377 seniors for one entire month – It was such an instant gratification knowing that each box we packed would go to one senior and alleviate some of his or her food security-related stress for the next month!

A Recap of the James Brister Society Awards Evening

Author: Lillian Gardiner, GEd ‘11

Last Friday was the James Brister Society’s 18th Annual Student and Faculty Leadership Awards Reception held at Du Bois College House. The event honors faculty and students who exemplify excellence, leadership, and commitment to diversity at Penn.

Grandparents, parents, siblings, and friends of the awardees came from near and far, some by airplane, to take part in the celebration. A surprise performance by Penn Masala got the night started. The presenters often knew the awardee well which made for many lovely and sometimes tearful speeches. The winners’ acceptance speeches were equally touching, with students acknowledging the important role played by their family, friends, and Penn’s Cultural Centers in their experience at Penn.

This year, the student recipients were Lisa Doi, C’13, Angel Contrera, W’13, Dawson Kaaua, WG’13, Aya Saed, C’13, Michelle Ming-Shih Leong, EE’13, Spencer Stubbs, NU’13 and the faculty recipient was Dr. Salamishah Tillet, an Assistant Professor of English and Africana Studies.Named after the first person of color to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania in 1881, the James Brister Society is comprised of alumni leaders who seek to improve the quality of the campus experience for students, faculty and administrators of color.

The faculty member and six student winners were selected from among a slate of candidates by the alumni boards and steering committees of the Penn Alumni Diversity Alliance. Each winner is presented their award by an alumna/us.

As one of the hosts of this event, I was technically working. But it hardly felt like work to be part of such an affirmative and special evening.

yPenn in New York: An Insider’s Perspective

Authors: Marvin Rocha and Nicole Svonavec, GeD’09

Last month, yPenn launched its inaugural yPenn Speaker Series at The Penn Club of New York. The Speaker Series connected young alumni in the New York Area with CEO and Chairman of Travelers Companies, Trustee Jay Fishman (W’74 WG’74). The following is an excerpt from Jessica Trief’s write-up of the inaugural yPenn Speaker Series event.

On Monday night, I attended the yPenn Speaker Series at the Penn Club of New York with Jay Fishman, CEO and Chairman of The Travelers Companies.   I was pleasantly surprised by the turnout and appreciative of the value of the event and Mr. Fishman’s insights.

The event began with a cocktail reception on the 10th floor where we spent time catching up with fellow young alumni. Despite there being more than 40 people, the space felt intimate and there was ample opportunity to chat with Mr. Fishman. As expected, many of the alumni attending the event were financial professionals, but there was a surprising amount of diversity. I, for example, a young alumna who works at a brand consultancy was happy to connect with an ’06 alumna who started her own gorilla marketing company.

When Mr. Fishman spoke to the group he provided great advice for us young alumni. He briefly discussed the economic state, but really focused on the essentials of professional development. He told us to keep our options open rather than narrowing them and specializing. He emphasized the importance of learning both how to receive and deliver feedback. He said the people you work with are even more important than where you work and you should always feel like you are learning. He recommended treating every project given to you, whether perceived as important or not, as an opportunity to demonstrate your ability and skills.  In addition he fielded questions from the group about Sheryl Sandberg’s most recent career advice, his daily responsibilities at Travelers and his involvement on many prestigious Boards.

Mr. Fishman was a strong start to this yPenn Speaker Series. He is truly an admirable leader.  He takes a long-term point of view calling financial performance a marathon, not a sprint. He takes few, but calculated risks and he hasn’t strayed from his strategy.  Forbes had an article about him called “Wall Street’s Honest Man” and said “he has nothing to hide.” In fact, he is a remarkable tale of straight-talking his way to success.”  He was truly inspiring, motivational and engaging.

We look forward to expanding our yPenn Speaker Series programming soon.

What Else is Going on at Penn? Something You Should Know About…

Author: Molly Rand, GEd’13

As a follow up to my wonderful colleague Lillian’s blog post last week on “What’s Going on at Penn…and Why Do I Never Know About It?!” I thought I would share an update about another interesting Penn event that those in the community might like to know about…and the best part of the news – it hasn’t happened yet!

On Friday, April 5, Penn President Amy Gutmann and other experts will explore online learning and what it may have in store for higher education at the Silfen University Forum.

The forum will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Penn’s Irvine Auditorium, 3401 Spruce St.

Dr. Gutmann will moderate the Forum, which includes Thomas Friedman, a New York Times columnist and three-time Pulitzer Prize winner; the Honorable Martha J. Kanter, U.S. Under Secretary of Education; William E. Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland; and Daphne Koller, Stanford University professor and co-founder of the online learning platform Coursera, which has enrolled almost 2.8 million students and is adding about 70,000 new students weekly from around the world.

Web-based teaching and learning are pioneering a new model for higher education, with the capacity to give millions more people access to a top-level educational experience.

“The global economy needs an ever more highly educated work force of talented people,” Gutmann said. “And one avenue to that goal may be through massive online learning, a system in which Penn has been an early leader.  MOOCs also hold great promise for helping our faculty further improve our traditional classroom learning experience.  For example, students could learn basic concepts through online coursework, freeing faculty to spend more class time on advanced concepts and discussion.  The possibilities are boundless.”

Penn is among the inaugural cohort of universities offering free online courses through Coursera, which launched in 2012.  Penn faculty have offered 19 courses on Coursera, from a wide range of departments, including medicine, finance, design, legal studies, nursing, ethics, computer science, health policy, math, music, engineering, poetry, pharmacology, and classics, and more than 840,000 students from around the world have registered for Penn online courses since they began. Penn’s Introduction to Calculus, an online course taught by Robert Ghrist, a Penn Integrates Knowledge professor, has been recommended for credit by the American Council on Education.

The Silfen University Forum is free and attendees can register here.
