This May, members of the Class of 2009 will reunite to celebrate their 5th Reunion. They’ve chosen the theme BYO9 in honor of the Philly BYO restaurant culture. The planning committee is encouraging fellow 09ers to BYO (bring your own) memories, stories, and updates, but of course, we’ll already have the wine. With just two weeks left in the Interview Program cycle, days have been filled to the brim. However we had a chance to stop and marvel at our amazing interviewers the other day when we received a package from some of our incredible Massachusetts Chairs!

Troy A. Paredes recently completed his term as commissioner of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), serving throughout the financial crisis and its aftermath, during which time the SEC undertook numerous initiatives to restructure the regulation of financial markets, including the SEC advanced rule makings to implement the Dodd-Frank Act and the JOBS Act. Before his government service, Mr. Paredes was a professor of law and a professor of business (by courtesy) at the Washington University in St. Louis. He has also been a visiting professor of law at UCLA and Georgetown. He practiced law in California at O’Melveny & Myers, Steptoe & Johnson, and Irell & Manella, where his practice focused on financings, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance. He is the author of numerous academic articles and is a coauthor of a multivolume securities regulation treatise, Securities Regulation.

On New Year’s Day, the Penn Women’s Basketball team beat the University of Miami 67-66. This was the first win against an ACC school for our team.
Nearly 50 local alumni and families were there to cheer on the Quakers, which includes our local Alyssa Baron, a Penn senior, and leader of her team.
The Baron family and other team parents brought the Penn crowd to nearly 100 fans! It was a great way to start the new year by cheering for the red and blue while enjoying the warm weather of our “Sunshine State”.
The crowd included current students, newly admitted Class of 2018 students, Penn parents, alumni, and members of the Old Guard.
The Penn Club of Miami proudly waved our flag and we cheered for our red and blue.

Last weekend, the Penn Alumni Club of Philadelphia hosted three sold out events in three days. On Friday night, we attended opening night of Mask and Wig’s 126th Annual Production: “Wishful Sinking.” What a great night of laughter and live theater!

On Saturday afternoon, we hosted our bi-annual Casserole Blitz volunteer event with the University City Hospitality Coalition. For over 25 years, the University City Hospitality Coalition has served the homeless and hungry in University City. More photos on Facebook.

On Sunday, we celebrated Chinese New Year at our 2nd Annual Dim Sum event in Chinatown. More photos on Facebook.

FAMILY NIGHT at the PALESTRA
On March 7, 2014, the Association of Alumnae and Alumni Relations held a successful event with the Penn Women’s Basketball team at the Palestra for the 3rd Annual Family Night at the Palestra!
FAMILY DAY at MASK and WIG
On March 22, 2014, Alumni Relations hosted its 4th Annual Family Day at Mask and Wig! Many alumni brought their kids to the Mask and Wig Clubhouse, 310 S. Quince Street, Philadelphia, for a fun-filled afternoon beginning with lunch, followed by an age-appropriate show. After the show, the kids joined the performers on stage for a kick-line and singing of the Red and Blue. Penn’s Mask and Wig is an all-male comedy troupe that has entertained Philadelphians and the Penn community since 1889 with its original revues. This year’s production, Wishful Sinking, was adapted to appeal to children ages 12 and under.
4O WINKS with the SPHINX and PENN ALUMNI
On Friday and Saturday, March 14 and 15, 2014, Penn alumni and their children spent an overnight adventure at Penn’s Museum for 40 Winks with the Sphinx and Penn Alumni. The night’s activities are geared to take intrepid explorers on a journey through time and across continents, with hands-on opportunities, through games and crafts, to explore ancient Egypt, the mummies and hieroglyphics, the ancient Greeks and Romans, the world of the ancient Maya, and more! Following a scavenger hunt and an evening expedition through the galleries by flashlight, explorers rolled out their sleeping bags to doze at the foot of the third largest granite Sphinx in the world. The program concluded with a light breakfast in the Museum Cafe at 8am.

Professor Chow will discuss the progress and forward vision of U.S. global health diplomacy, the context of such diplomacy within the evolution of U.S. foreign policy, why this diplomacy matters at home, as well as the outlook for private sector efforts.
Currently serving as distinguished service professor at Carnegie Mellon University, Jack Chow has been involved with health public policy both domestically and abroad. Chow was the first U.S. diplomat of ambassador rank appointed to a public health mission. He has worked with esteemed politicians including U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, Representative Silvio O. Conte, and U.S. Senator Arlen Specter. Spirits were low going into part two of Saturday’s doubleheader after Penn Women’s Basketball’s tragic loss to Princeton, 53 – 84. After two hours of cheering, screaming, and serious heart palpitations, we celebrated the Men’s big victory over Princeton, 77-74. It was a great day to be a Quaker! Join us back in The Palestra this Saturday for College Game Day followed by Penn vs. St. Joe’s at 7 PM.
