Thanks to Penn’s Green Campus Partnership, QuakerFest is becoming more environmentally sustainable. This year, QuakerFest, the alumni tailgate held before the Homecoming football game, will be a zero-waste event, in line with the University’s ReThink Your Footprint waste minimization awareness campaign. A zero-waste event is an event where at least 90% of event waste is diverted from landfills. All waste that is produced at the event will be recyclable, compostable, or reusable.
The goal of the ReThink Your Footprint campaign is to raise the level of conversation about waste management beyond solely recycling and into a broader discussion of source reduction and reuse – resulting in greater diversion of campus waste from the landfill. ReThink Your Footprint culminates during three weeks, November 4 – 22, with an awareness campaign designed to engage the entire Penn Community. In support of our Climate Action Plan’s goals in the area of waste minimization, an assortment of initiatives, events, presentations, and other forms of outreach will take place during this period to share information about environmentally sustainable practices in source reduction, reuse, and recycling.
With up to 1,000 people attending QuakerFest, this event is a perfect opportunity to demonstrate ReThink Your Footprint in action. At QuakerFest, all plates and utensils will be compostable. Student volunteers will help attendees with zero-waste decision-making when they finish eating at the QuakerFest picnic. Other volunteers will help explain what zero-waste events are and how this event ties in to Penn’s Climate Action Plan goals to attendees.

University City District is a great resource for all things University City. They provide a packed calendar of events, listings of local restaurants, farmers markets, parks, and much more.
With the support of the William Penn Foundation, UCD opened The Porch at 30th Street Station. Located right outside of 30th Street station, The Porch is open to the public and provides seating, seasonal entertainment, fitness classes, and special events from April to October. Mark your calendar. April 1st kicks off the festivities for 2013!
University City District also puts out a publication every year that highlights special events and the physical changes of West Philadelphia, both on Penn’s campus and beyond. Check out the latest The State of University City to see how our neighborhood has transformed in the past 15 years. Like the UCD Facebook page to receive updates on what is happening around town.

Check out Spruce Street Plaza between 33rd and 34th on Spruce Street. The old parking lot across from HUP that once housed food carts has been transformed into Penn’s latest public green space. A great new place to enjoy lunch or just get some fresh air.
Don’t worry, your favorite food carts are just across 33rd street by Franklin Field.

Only nine more days until we can cheer on two fellow Penn Alumni in the 2012 London Olympic games!
Penn is continuing it’s Summer Olympic streak in 2012 by sending two alumni to the games. According to the Penn Athletics, there has been a representative in every summer Olympic game since 1900. Check out the list of Penn’s list of Olympians.
Former Penn rower, Susan Francia, C’04, G’04 will be attending her second Olympic games along with former Penn basketball player, Koko Archibong, C’03, who will be competiting as a member of the Nigeria basketball team for the first time.
Francia, a gold member winner, walked-on her sophomore year and is the 11th Penn women’s rower to make the Olypmics.
Archibong, a four-year letter winner is believed to be the first person with ties to Penn to play basketball in the games.

If you didn’t get a chance register for a tree this spring, make sure you do next year!
Penn’s Green Campus Partnership program is in its second year of a Creating Canopy, a tree giveaway for Penn faculty and staff.
The University partnered with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation on the free tree giveaway. They provide you with everything you need to know to plant and take care of your tree.
I chose an Eastern Redbud which can grow up to 30 feet high. I loaded the tree in my car and brought it to its new home in Delco.
And here it is, all safely planted in my yard and growing taller every day.
