A Fluff-Tastic Surprise

Author: Liz Pinnie

With just two weeks left in the Interview Program cycle, days have been filled to the brim.  However we had a chance to stop and marvel at our amazing interviewers the other day when we received a package from some of our incredible Massachusetts Chairs! Liz Pinnie

Inside was everything our hungry and sugar-crazed crew could want:  Squirrel Nut Zippers, Neco Wafers, Boston Brown Bread, Fluffernutter Sandwich ingredients and an abundance of Cape Cod Chips.  Many thanks to Shannon Scully, Paula Breger, Mimi Neuman, and Felix Layne, our awesome 85% or Bust Team from the Phillips and North Shore Interview Committees!

Penn Alumni Travel: Cuba Part 1

Author: Emilie C. K. LaRosa

This year Penn Alumni Travel went somewhere we haven’t gone to in over a decade: Cuba. Cuba has long been off the travel menu for most United States citizens, but, in 2011, certain groups could again travel to Cuba under a specific “people-to-people” license from the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control. Penn Alumni Travel received its People to People license last summer, and immediately over 40 Penn alumni and friends signed up to join one of two Cuba departures last month.

Traveling on a People to People itinerary is a little different from your typical overseas trip. Every day must be filled with meaningful exchanges with the Cuban locals. This means most hours between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. are filled with visits to museums, artists’ studios, and other local places of interest. We also had lectures with historians, experts in Cuban agriculture, and representatives from the Cuban National Center for Sex Education, and even visited the Cuban Rap Agency. After a lively discussion at the rap agency, we were treated to an impromptu performance.

Luckily our alumni are used to a full schedule filled with educational offerings, and they took the busy schedule in stride. One of my favorite moments of the trip was the private classical guitar concert in the Ceramics Museum of Havana. After a tour from the museum director, we all filtered into the museum’s beautiful interior courtyard and listened while classical guitarist Luis Manuel Molina played several songs. From the first note, it was clear Molina was a world-class musician, and he was playing just for us! Truly a superb ending to a busy day.

My second favorite moment? The farewell dinner in a Havana paladar (a restaurant run out of a family home). Not only was the food delicious and the ambiance unique, but by the end of the meal song had broken out, and we ended the trip with a hearty rendition of “The Red and the Blue” and “Drink a Highball.”

I’ll leave this blog entry here. As I mentioned, we had two Cuba departures each with a faculty and a staff host, and so you can expect three more Cuba blog entries after mine. But Cuba is such a unique and interesting destination that 100 blog entries would not do it justice. Enjoy the rest of the tour!

Enough

Author:  Rachel Stewart ’16

It’s been less than a month since classes have started, but when I walked into my first lecture of the week last Monday, my Econ professor proudly announced that the practice exams for next week’s midterm were now available online.

Ah, midterms. For some reason, they begin here about a month after classes start and often don’t end (for the most unlucky students) until reading days. Once they start up, I feel like the “busy” competition between students on campus kicks into action: “Oh, I’ll try to make it tonight, but I have two meetings, a conference to prepare for, a midterm next week, and two papers! And I have OCR interviews. Ugh, it’s just so much to do” or “I’m SO busy tonight, I have a Skype interview at 9PM and then meetings until 1AM and then I have to study for finance.”

Penn students are the most self-motivated and disciplined group of 20-year-olds I have ever met. They do amazing work, tackle problems that even grown adults can’t solve, and start NGOs and businesses even before getting a diploma. All of this comes with an insane amount of pressure to be “busy” at all time of all hours of the day. The question that has been floating around campus these past few weeks, however, is: when is enough enough?

Enough is when you start falling asleep in class because you were up late last night arguing with the e-board of your club about the next event. Enough is when you have to skip class for a club or sorority/fraternity commitment, and then you do poorly on the next exam. Enough is when you’ve gone out for brunch three times in the past month and don’t think you (or your wallet) can handle another cinnamon bun cream cheese stuffed French toast. The secret to enough is that you have the power to define it.

I’ve come to love Penn and I know most students that go here do too, but we can drive ourselves and each other crazy. My hope is that the tragedies of this semester awaken students to define “enough” for themselves more readily, more proudly, and more actively.

February!

Author: Edna Gonzalez-Serrano, GED’15

Well the school year was slow to start with winter storms left and right. This week has been my second full week of classes and it’s already February?!! My comp exams are in 2 weeks, spring break is 4 weeks away, and graduation is 98 days away!!! I feel as if time is on super speed. Somewhere in the middle of all that time I have to get a job, pass my classes and do an independent study with Professor Marybeth Gasman. Wish me luck!

Here’s some photos from the opening of the Arch Building yesterday.

The food was delicious! But I had to wait in a looooooooong line to get a free sampler. Which was totally worth it! Authentic Mexican hot chocolate, brownies made with Mexican chocolate, fresh guacamole, fresh drinks!

Road to ICCAs

CP in the DP!

CP in the DP!

Finally, I can say that I’ve made it above the fold!  In case you missed yesterday’s copy of the DP, Counterparts made the front page for our stellar performance at ICCAs this past weekend at Drexel.  Of the 50 groups competing in the Mid-Atlantic Division, we are one of 10 that will move on to semifinals.  They will take place at Rutgers later this March, which gives me more than enough time to watch “Pitch Perfect.” 🙂

Aw, thanks John!

Aw, thanks John!

We performed three songs from our Fall show – “Big White Room,” “Lady is a Tramp,” and “Creep.”  Lilly, a fellow CP sophomore with me, added in simple yet effective choreography for each song as well.  Overall, it took us a little over a week to fully prepare and refine our set list.  Nina, our Music Director, Swaroop, our President, and Lilly did an incredible job with getting us to performance level!  It’s no wonder that, in addition to advancing to semifinals, we won both Best Choreography and Best Soloist Performance.  If only John Legend could see us now…

I am so proud of CP.  This is the first time I have ever “competed” in something relating to music, and I won’t deny that it does feel different.  I admit that I find much more satisfaction in performing for people I know.  However, to have external recognition of what I myself have known along – that Counterparts is an extremely talented group – is certainly gratifying.  We’re a musical force to be reckoned with, and I know we will show that in the next round.  The road to ICCAs has just begun!

Penn Alumni Families in Miami on New Year’s Day 2014

Submitted by Stacey Shoer, Miami Alumni Club President

On New Year’s Day, the Penn Women’s Basketball team beat the University of Miami 67-66.  This was the first win against an ACC school for our team.

Nearly 50 local alumni and families were there to cheer on the Quakers, which includes our local Alyssa Baron, a Penn senior, and leader of her team.

The Baron family and other team parents brought the Penn crowd to nearly 100 fans!  It was a great way to start the new year by cheering for the red and blue while enjoying the warm weather of our “Sunshine State”.

The crowd included current students, newly admitted Class of 2018 students, Penn parents, alumni, and members of the Old Guard.

The Penn Club of Miami proudly waved our flag and we cheered for our red and blue.

Penn Alumni Families – March was a busy month!

submitted by K. Clark
New Image gif
Below is a list of our successful March 2014 Family Programs.  I’m sorry you missed them!

Keep an eye on the new Penn Alumni Families website, and don’t miss another opportunity to attend a Penn event with your family!

FAMILY NIGHT at the PALESTRA
On March 7, 2014, the Association of Alumnae and Alumni Relations held a successful event with the Penn Women’s Basketball team at the Palestra for the 3rd Annual Family Night at the Palestra!

FAMILY DAY at MASK and WIG
On March 22, 2014, Alumni Relations hosted its 4th Annual Family Day at Mask and Wig!  Many alumni brought their kids to the Mask and Wig Clubhouse, 310 S. Quince Street, Philadelphia, for a fun-filled afternoon beginning with lunch, followed by an age-appropriate show.  After the show, the kids joined the performers on stage for a kick-line and singing of the Red and Blue.  Penn’s Mask and Wig is an all-male comedy troupe that has entertained Philadelphians and the Penn community since 1889 with its original revues.  This year’s production, Wishful Sinking, was adapted to appeal to children ages 12 and under.

4O WINKS with the SPHINX and PENN ALUMNI
On Friday and Saturday, March 14 and 15, 2014, Penn alumni and their children spent an overnight adventure at Penn’s Museum for 40 Winks with the Sphinx and Penn Alumni. The night’s activities are geared to take intrepid explorers on a journey through time and across continents, with hands-on opportunities, through games and crafts, to explore ancient Egypt, the mummies and hieroglyphics, the ancient Greeks and Romans, the world of the ancient Maya, and more!  Following a scavenger hunt and an evening expedition through the galleries by flashlight, explorers rolled out their sleeping bags to doze at the foot of the third largest granite Sphinx in the world. The program concluded with a light breakfast in the Museum Cafe at 8am.

Look for additional family programming throughout the year!  If you live outside of the 8-county Philadelphia area and wish to be included on our e-mailing list for Penn Alumni Family Events, please send an email with your request to Kristina Clark at krclark@upenn.edu.
