What’s Going on in Penn Park?

The weather was perfect on Sunday – sunny with a slight breeze. I took advantage of the beautiful weather by taking a walk from West Philly to Center City. When I walked by Penn Park, I noticed some construction in the parking lot. I wonder if the construction has to do with the upcoming Time to Shine (#TimetoShine) celebration this Friday, April 19th. I am looking forward to seeing Penn Park during the big celebration!

West Philly Blooms

Penn Décor

As my 5th reunion gets closer – only 51 more days! – the reunion committee is finalizing décor for our Saturday night class party. I was so inspired by the Penn décor at last Friday’s 2nd Annual Presidents Meeting. Here are a few photos from the cocktail hour and dinner in College Hall Room 200.

Each table setting included sheet music for “Drink A Highball”. While it was neat to see the sheet music, the printout was unnecessary. All of the class leaders knew the song by heart.

Road Trip to Penn @Harvard/Dartmouth Weekend

One of my favorite things about winter is going on road trips to attend Penn Men’s Basketball away games. This past weekend we braved the after-effects of Winter Storm Nemo and drove up to Harvard and Dartmouth to support the Quakers. While the two gyms were underwhelming (no one in the Ivy League can begin to compete with The Palestra), it was an amazing weekend full of basketball and quality time with fellow Penn alumni.

Penn Men’s Basketball Reaches 1,700 Wins

Penn beat NJIT 54-53 on Thursday night. This was no ordinary win. This was the 1,700th win for the program. The Quakers are the 11th NCAA Division I program to achieve the milestone. You can read more about Penn Men’s Basketball milestone wins here.

The win was especially timely because it occurred on January 17th, 2013, Ben Franklin’s 307th birthday. Happy birthday, Ben!

Celebrate Chinese New Year in Philadelphia

January 1st has come and gone. Now it’s time to prepare for another new years celebration: Chinese New Year!

2013 is the year of the snake.

The Penn Alumni Club of Philadelphia is celebrating Chinese New Year by going to dim sum on Sunday, February 3rd, only one week before Chinese New Year. Think of dim sum as Chinese tapas. There is a huge selection of sweet and savory dishes and something for both vegetarians and meat lovers.

Penn Alumni Club of Philadelphia Volunteers at the Penn Vet Working Dog Center

The Penn Alumni Club of Philadelphia recently volunteered at the Penn Vet Working Dog Center. Established in 2007, the Penn Vet Working Dog Center is part of the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine and serves as a national research and development center for detection dogs. I first learned about the Penn Vet Working Dog Center from Frankly Penn posts: here and here. I scheduled a group volunteer event for our club members and hoped others loved puppies as much as I do. Little did I know that Penn alumni in Philly LOVE puppies! Our volunteer event filled up in record time of half a day! Here are a few photos from our volunteer event.

New Penn Buses – An Inside Look

I finally rode on one of the new Penn buses I recently saw cruising around campus. When I entered the bus, I was blown away by the fancy blue leather seats.

I highly recommend riding the new Penn bus next time you see it. The lighting is great inside the bus, and the seats are incredibly comfortable. These new buses are certainly a huge improvement over the school bus models. Even though a free bus ride home is a free bus ride home, I would much rather ride in these new beautifully decorated buses. I got home feeling very Proudly Penn.

I was walking home from work when I saw this Penn bus at 38th and Walnut. The new design looks Penn-tastic! Has anyone else seen the new buses cruising around campus?
